Richard Formby CDR album limited to 300 copies out now on www.goldenlabrecords.co.uk

To us here at Golden Lab, Richard Formby has always been a sound engineer first, a musician second. Thats just the context in which weve known him, both personally and through the sleeves of the Hood, The Telescopes, Quack Quack, Herman Dune, Spectrum, Vibracathedral Orchastra, Bushpilot and countless other records that he has worked on. And this, Richards debut solo album under his own name, is very much a sound engineers album. We see him as something of an Eno for the post-rock generation (just listen to us with our flights of fancy, but its da troooof!). Richard plays the studio like a guitarist, well, plays his guitar. And it astounds us how someone with such a broad impact on experimental music today remains a fringe figure.
Anyone whos ever worked with him knows that hes the great undiscovered genius amongst the current crop of British sound experimentors. Vibracathedral Orchestra, without second thought, refer to him as venerable, in the notes to their Formby produced Tuning to the Rooster LP. But because he has about as much self-importance as a lemming, Richard has never really been anything more than a footnote on an album sleeve. Our hope for his amazing album is that it will begin to change all this quite soon.
