: Art exhibit draws hundreds to Strathmore neighborhood Posted by Maureen Sieh June 16, 2007 5:46PM Categories: Breaking News, City News Today's seventh annual Art on the Porches in Syracuse's historic Strathmore neighborhood brought hundreds of people to walk a block lined with entertainment and, of course, art. About 1,000 people walked Ruskin Avenue during the day-long event, estimated John DeMott, a resident of Strathmore and a volunteer in the event. "Ruskin Avenue is always the best," DeMott said. The reason? "Big porches," DeMott said. There was music on three stages and dancing in the street during the afternoon, but the focus was on art. Artists took over residents' porches to exhibit and sell their works. Artists Jo Cullen and June Capels had taken over the porch at 118 Ruskin Ave. "We love our porch and want to be here next year," Cullen said. For one day every year, one street in Syracuse's Strathmore neighborhood is transformed into an outdoor art gallery. It's called "Art on the Porches," and this year porches on the 100-block of Ruskin Avenue were filled with the works of Syracuse and Central New York artists. Art on the Porches

( main site) is an art ,music , and cultural festival held once a year in the Strathmore neighborhood of Syracuse. This year it will be hosted by our neighbors on Ruskin Ave.

, on June 16th , from 11am to 5pm. Last year we had over 40 artists , 9 musical acts , 2 dancing troupes ,and 1 shipfull of swaggering pirates roaming the street! We had delicious Thai food from Lao Village and over 500 attendees! Artists - we'd love to have you show ( and sell )your work ! Please fill out the artist registration form

and contact us

if you have any questions. Musicians - please send a message via myspace if you are interested in performing. We are looking to showcase and promote the cultural and original musical talent in the area!................................................ *****************************************************
Who I'd like to meet:

The Alchemical Nursery Project announces a Trash Art Challenge. The concept of the Trash Art Challenge is for local artists to take discarded and found objects to show how trash can be redesigned into works of art.
Participating artists’ works will be exhibited in the “Lead to Gold Alchemical Trash Art Show” from May 21st-27th at Spark Contemporary Art Space (1005 E. Fayette St, Syracuse) as well as in the lobby of the Palace Theater (2384 James St, Syracuse) on May 28th and 29th. The May 21st showing at Spark is part of the Third Thursdays citywide arts open (see www.th3syracuse.com for more information).

The art will be auctioned off for the benefit of the Alchemical Nursery Project, during the International Social Action Film Festival at The Palace Theater in Eastwood on May 28 and 29, 6:30 – 9:00 pm. Participating artists will be provided free tickets to both nights of the International Social Action Film Festival and be featured on The Alchemical Nursery Project website. In addition, a panel of judges will award the “Most Creative” entry with a cash prize equal to the amount bid for the artists’ work.

The submission deadline for entries is May 11, 2009. Artists should request the Trash Art Challenge Artists Agreement for participation info.

The Film Festival will showcase local and international short films as well as a feature presentation of “War Dance,” an Academy Awards Nominee and Sundance Film Festival Winner. For more information and to submit artwork, please contact Elizabeth Slate at 315.412.1012, alchemicalnursery@fastmail.fm or Frank Cetera at 315.380.6161, frcetera@alchemicalnursery.org; or visit www.alchemicalnursery.org.
