bio.
im more about creativity and less about fame.
its more about accomplishments and staying happy with myself.
as clint catalyst said yesterday - there's a difference between wanting to be successful and wanting to be famous.
the basic thread.
at 17 i had recorded over 35 songs in my dad's studio in the basement, and i got a demo deal and recorded four songs professionally in salt lake city. i was flown out to l.a. where i did a photoshoot, met some people, and started writing with billy steinberg who wrote 'like a virgin' etc. i was feeling a bit culture-shocked.
after that i met billy corgan when the pumpkins were doing an instore performance.
i then decided after a talk with him that i needed some time to figure out who i was after leaving the mormon religion.
i went to chicago and billy and i made some songs for the soundtrack of the movie 'spun' and since i knew protools when not many people did i began working for 5 or 6 established producers over the next year or two doing protools engineering and editing.
Some records i worked on were: Marianne Faithfull, Zwan, the Dandy Warhols, and Sara Mclachlan (which i got engineer credit for since i worked crazy hours because i was really dedicated to it .... she was one of my favorite artists growing up...)
after that in 2003 i decided to get serious about my own career and i stopped working as an engineer and took a chance on myself. i wrote the songs on The Lost Record EP during 2003-2004 and in early 2005 i signed a deal with Chrysalis Music.
There was alot of turmoil in early 2005 over my record, which i won't get into, but my spirits were depleted and when Billy Corgan asked me to take a break and tour the world with him it couldn't have been better timing. During this tour i met two of my musical heros David Bowie and Robert Smith (who i still talk to on occasion ;), saw the world, got to perform on Leno and Letterman etc. It was a dream on one level and an awakening on another. Things in my personal life were so bad that i started to fall apart on tour because i was alone most of the time and overtired. I wrote a string of new songs during this time.
When i got back in fall of 2005 i went back to 'finish' my record in Chicago. I then had my heart totally shattered when i found out my boyfriend had cheated on me numerous times while i was away, and the people working on my record were falling apart for their own personal reasons. So Chrysalis pulled me out of there with only six songs finished saying we'd do an EP and go back and finish the others in a few months.
2006 was a slow crashing down. In January I mixed five songs with Neal H Pogue. Then nothing....cue silence.. Chrysalis and I started to disagree on the direction i should go as i wanted to finish my record and put it out and they wanted me to write pop songs and go write with this person and that person on that elusive hunt for a 'hit'. It was then that i learned how messed up the record business is. I asked to be let go in August and in September they did.
At this point i was so depressed that i had to take some time off. It was right here that i met my boyfriend Justin and disappeared for six months. I sustained myself by selling paintings and making art and graphic design. In the middle of 2007 I decided to take the Lost Record EP and put it out myself on my own label LOVELY CHAOS RECORDS. :) It was released in Oct 2007.
In January of 2008 I began a new project with Audrey Kitching called 'factory girls' that is a tribute to andy warhol's factory and is about visual art, performance art, painting, film, and installations. It will premiere when the exhibit opens of Glenn Kaino's works at the Warhol Museum in Pittsburg where we are included with pictures of original factory members as new equivalents. Its a great honor. :) Glenn shot us on Andy's own polaroid camera!
I have 25 unreleased songs now sitting on my shelf. so i have alot of plans to make. I also have many many written songs that are unrecorded from the dark years. (2005 & 6)
and a dance record i wrote in the healing year (2007)
I always wanted to have a record deal for as long as i can remember. It was my main goal. But when things started turning rotten in the industry in 2005, and when people started saying it wasn't smart to sign to a label because it was career suicide i felt really displaced.
It isn't until now that alot of my heros have left labels and are independent that i feel ok. I've been focusing my energy in everything that i love. Its more about waking up and accomplishing something cool again.
I'm gonna relaunch lindastrawberry.com in a couple of weeks and archive memorabilia, art books, photos, videos, and use it to release songs and art. :)
there's no more shock in shocking.
