"Living Word by Laura and William Gentry is an art project and a people project -- asking a variety of people of a variety of ages, races, occupations, and lifestyles -- what ONE word most defines them. Art is primarily about communication. This art project involves not only the original artists -- but it expands to include everyone who ever participates. The book includes black and white portraits of a wide range of people -- from the age of one to their 90s -- all wearing a plain white t-shirt of the word they feel best defines them. Brief text next to each portrait gives a sense of that individual. Look into the eyes of some fellow human beings and see a glimpse of who they are."

Stray
Eggplant is a conceptual art project begun in 2004, by artist Laura
Gentry. Because today’s
technology makes information so readily available to us, we are
inundated with it. Words fly at us from just about everywhere. Often,
this information is contextless and difficult to process. The Stray
Eggplant
project invites viewers to look differently at the whirl of random
words that fill our existence—to contemplate our personal
responsibility to interpret this deluge of information and find focus,
meaning and hope to sustain us in this journey.
Stray Eggplant is made up of small ceramic sculptures which are sold
throughout the country in Art*o*mat
vending machines and directly to consumers at The Gentry Joint Web Store for just $10.
Each unique, hand-made sculpture contains a random phrase from our postmodern culture, pulled out of context and emblazoned upon a whimsical vegetable, the quote can be interpreted in any number of ways. The viewer, then, becomes the meaning-maker. To explore this concept, each eggplant owner is invited to send a photo and response to Laura Gentry at P.O. Box 11, Marquette, IA 52158, e-mail to strayeggplant@yahoo.com.
Here is Laura with her sixth edition of eggplants, completed in February 2007.

“Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos into order, confusion into clarity.... It turns problems into gifts, failures into success, the unexpected into perfect timing, and mistakes into important events. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today and creates a vision for tomorrow. ” Beattie
Thank you for visiting! How are you? In Tokyo we're already in the beginning of spring = the 'blooming' season. Let me send you my watercolor painting of wax-like yellow plum flowers, because it would be harmonious with the brand-new hope :)
Hello Stray Eggplant!!! How is it going? Thanks for the message. Things here are going well...it is starting to get into sandstorm weather and things are heating up.
