Sounds Like
Wholesome indie-pop goodness, a bit sugary, suitable for girls and boys of all ages. Kind of like Cheerios. But in the form of a band.
For a taste, listen to our ELFM live session podcast here.
The year was 2007. The place was Leeds. I can't remember the month or anything but the weather was probably drizzly.
Against this gritty, post-modern, urban backdrop, Tim and Tom asked very nicely if a total stranger called Sim would like to come and sing some songs that they'd written and weren't really brave or talented enough to sing by themselves. They decided they liked Sim, because she wanted to be like Deborah Harry and was a little bit ethnic, so they decided to take a bold step and form a band. Then the threesome became a foursome when they roped in Dugal, who could play guitar and more importantly had been their friend since school and kept hanging around like a bad smell. Finally they recognised that every band needs a token Geordie, and they chanced upon Dave, who was wandering the streets of Leeds listening to Radiohead and playing funky slap bass grooves.
With the line-up complete they got down to the business of making their first demo, the Three Short Words E.P., and playing gigs pretty much anywhere that would have them. The fans joined the Facebook group and the money came rolling in; soon the band had made more than eight pounds each. In early 2008 they wrote some new songs, and decided to record three of the best on a second EP (which is going to be ready some time in April).
Streetlights fun facts:
- We have a combined age of 98
- Four of us enjoy Pro Evo
- We drink much more tea than most bands do
- Only two of us have 20/20 vision
- We enjoy making distasteful jokes about public school kids
- At least one of us has a strong dislike for the music of Michael Buble
