Blackberry Eating

I love to go out in late September
among the fat, overripe, icy, black blackberries
to eat blackberries for breakfast,
the stalks very prickly, a penalty
they earn for knowing the black art
of blackberry-making; and as I stand among them
lifting the stalks to my mouth, the ripest berries
fall almost unbidden to my tongue,
as words sometimes do, certain peculiar words
like strengths or squinched,
many-lettered, one-syllabled lumps,
which I squeeze, squinch open, and splurge well
in the silent, startled, icy, black language
of blackberry eating in late September.

- Galway Kinnell

Ah so you've managed to wade through my longwinded 'book' section, I see. (What can I say, I was bored one evening and had the categorizing bug.
    )

McEwan is brilliant, I love his style! Have you read The Daydreamer? It's his one stab at a children's book of sorts, and it's very good (and even an interesting read for adults who aren't usually into that sort of thing, which appears to be what he was aiming for).

I'm jealous again, Pride in NYC sounds fantastic! Houston Pride wasn't too shabby either-- very fun, and there was no shortage of gay cowboys.

Not Waterhouse, though I believe he does rank among the Pre-Raphaelites:

Herbert James Draper's 1898 painting The Lament of Icarus depicts an image of the dead Icarus after his fall. Draper shows Icarus being cared for by nymphs, which Draper often depicted in his paintings. He emphasizes the sadness of Ovid's story through the dark colors and the caring expressions on the nymph's faces. Draper's painting does not depict any particular point in Ovid's story. Instead Draper begins where Ovid left off depicting what happened after Icarus fell to the ocean.
