From the age of three, Stricknine’s style of production was moulded from listening to his brothers’ tapes and records while trying to breakdance. By age 13, he was hosting his own 2 hour radio show in Cairns, Queensland, where he was born and raised. “Being a DJ and producing was always a hobby, even when all I had was a mate’s 4-track and $90 plastic turntables. It was wack as f*** but it was a start, and it would lead to the tech side of sh** eventually”. By 2002, after moving to Brisbane, Stricknine did his first international support along side DJ Revolution and Bias B. In 2003 he promoted his first show and played alongside DJ Revolution, Mass MC and Big Zed. At the same time launched Class A Records, soon licensing major U.S releases for release in Australia.
The first release on Class A was from hip hop heavyweight; KRS-ONE (Keep Right) which was followed by Chino XL’s Poison Pen and more. Stricknine was also working with Clinic from Brisbane to produce a 5 track sampler which was given out free on Ozhiphop.com. With a few press appearances and minimal airplay, they started to get exposure and establish a fan base across the country. In 2005, they recorded “Brisbane City De Ja Vu” for the Nuffsaid Records compilation In Case You Didn’t Know which also featured tracks from Prowla, Shawn Lov, Brad Strut from Lyrical Commission and many more. This was the first commercial release containing Stricknine production.
In the same year he came in contact with Brooklyn artists Thirstin Howl The 3rd & Rack-Lo as a promoter, and after hearing Stricknine’s beats, they were ready to collaborate on a track which resulted in the 12” single “5 Finger Discount”: an anthem for shoplifters which also featured Clinic. The single also contained a Strick-produced solo track from Clinic “Real Estate”. After hearing more beats, Thirstin Howl & Rack-Lo approached him about doing a whole album. “When I heard the production from Stricknine I agreed to it because everything I heard was hot,” said Thirstin. Stricknine signed them both to release Lo Down & Dirty which he contributed five tracks to. This marked the first time an Australian label had ever signed an established U.S hip hop artist. When Tim Dog performed in Brisbane in 2005 Stricknine performed with him (as his DJ) and recorded two tracks which are yet to be released. He also contacted one of his all time favourite MCs, MF Grimm about collaborating, and what started out as a handful of tracks soon turned into an album when the chemistry proved to be nothing short of amazing. Stricknine was also the man behind the decks for several mixtapes including MF Grimm’s The Order of The Baker / Gingerbread Man Mixtape which contains some dark exclusive production from the man himself. Other producers/artists Stricknine has worked with include Prowla, and The Optimen (Sammsonite & Datsun).
Stricknine has worked with some of the world’s top MC’s including Kool Keith, Blaq Poet, Big Shug, Pumpkinhead, Motion Man and many more. He has also performed with a list of world class acts that could go on for ever and is currently working on a solo release with an intense line-up which is still growing as we speak.
