• It’s Dublin’s longest running club-night – 636 nights and counting
• It started in the Kitchen in October 1994
• It moved to RiRa in January 1996
• It was initially only £1.99 in.
• 0ver 250,000 people have danced round it
• When it started it was the city’s most popular Gay night
• We have played 146,000 minutes of 80’s music
• It has run on every Monday night apart from Twice becos it was
Christmas day
• The Flyers are designed by Brian Nolan at www.detail.ie
• Every week 1200 people spend 1 minute making handbags out of our
flyers
• We go through 140,000 flyers a year
• The word handbag, although a reference to house music, is now
synonymous with 80’s music
• Handbag was started as a bet that we couldn’t possibly fill a club
on a Monday night
• Handbag is the only club in the UK and Ireland to win an award for
it’s flyers by ICAD
• The most popular songs are ‘Rock The Casbah’ by The Clash and ‘Blue
Monday’ by New Order
• We’ve gone through two mirror balls since we started
• Strictly Handbag has been running for 8 years longer than the UK’s
School Disco
• Nobody actually dances around their handbag

About me:
In October 1994 we started a club night quietly in the newly opened
U2’s Kitchen on East Essex St, Dublin, Ireland – within four weeks,
the club was turning away hundreds of people. What made this night
unique was that it was on a Monday Night, usually the quietest night
around town and its music policy was strictly based on playing 80’s
chart hits. The rest is history...
Now we've brought it to Friday nights - get your weekend on!
