DROPOUT SESSIONS
STUBB
Reviewed by Kev Hit Drum on 3/08/2007.
Being a simple yokel type, I always approve of music that can invoke an instant (positive!) reaction. A mere twenty seconds into the lead track of Stubb's EP and my face is hugely contorted into furious air guitar ecstasy. 'Road' begins with a big lolloping drumbeat before it is savagely underpinned with the aforementioned axe gymnastics that screams 'Hendriiiiix!' in your ears. The rest of the track is dominated by a fantastic foot stomping chorus and some more totally necessary wig outs. Definitely a track for one of those 'driving in your car' cd-r compilations......

Imagine Hendrix jamming with The Heads in a small, dark and moist rehearsal room and everything was recorded live to 1/2” tape – well, then you might have an idea of what Stubb is all about! But this is actually just a trio of two guys and a young lady from London in love with acid rock....

Live review for 07.09.07 at Fiddlers Elbow, Mantra night:
Next up were Stubb, a band who's 'Dropout Sessions' EP I've been spinning quite a bit of late. They opened with 'Galloping Horses' and 'Flame' from said EP and everyone present knew that they were in for half an hour of quality, pumping, psychedelic heavy groove. The rhythm section maintained a tight, relentless pulse and guaranteed that heads didn't stop nodding throughout the set and the guitarist used this platform to great effect, belting out all the right screeches, solos and riffs at all the right times. With only minimal pauses between songs it seemed like no time before their last number. For this they treated us to 'Road' and when half way through the song it became a rendition of Hendrix's 'Voodoo Chile' there were grins all round. The stage was perfectly set then for Grifter to step up.
