College campuses have become an important battleground for addressing economic inequities. Colleges and universities employ large numbers of people - graduate students, janitors, cafeteria workers, and professors - and so have power over the quality of life of entire communities. These institutions are also large purchasers - spending billions of dollars each year on everything from sweatshirts, to books, to building materials. They can therefore control the standards under which the good they purchase are produced. And, of course, universities and colleges have the responsibility to provide quality education to a diverse student population. Throughout the U.S., students are fighting for a voice in decisions on important issues such as how their tuition money is spent, how the institution behaves as an employer and member of a community, and who has access to higher education
The Student Labor Action Project (SLAP) is a joint initiative of Jobs with Justice and the United States Student Association that engages student organizations in economic justice campaigns. JwJ coalitions around the country house local SLAPs that connect students from multiple campuses. SLAP supports the growing student movement for economic justice by making links between campus and community organizing, providing skills training to build lasting student organizations, and developing campaigns that win concrete victories for working families. Additionally, SLAP partners with student organizations such as United Students Against Sweatshops, MEChA, Student-Farmworker Alliance, Student Action with Farmworkers, and Not With Our Money to build a strong student movement for workers rights and economic justice.
Who I'd like to meet: Students, Activist, Organizers, and all those who are willing to take a stand against the corporatization and privitization of our education and our communities.
Nationwide, corporate intimidation, discrimination, sexism, homophobia, and ageism are silencing the voices of students and workers - but the corporate and political elite will not have the final word without a fight. Through supporting organizing rights on campuses and in communities, increasing awareness of free trade, demanding living wages, immigrant’s rights, and an end to sweatshops, students and workers across the country are building a powerful movement in support of economic and social justice.

Here's a blurb about the program. Thanks for putting this up for me. Are you going to post it as a blog?
The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) and Harvard University are in partnership for the AFSCME/UNCF/Harvard Union Scholars Program. This program is for students of color who are in their sophomore or junior year at a four year college or university and interested in pursuing a career in social justice. Participants are paired with a mentor on an AFSCME organizing campaign for 10 weeks and receive hands on experience in the labor movement. Students can expect to learn how to: organize workers by visiting them at home and phone banking, help with campaign based research, political action and any other necessary aspect of the campaign. During their time in the program we cover all travel expenses to and from their host site as well as to Harvard for an orientation or debrief. We cover housing and rental car if needed. Students will receive a stipend of $4000 and if participants successfully complete the program, a need based scholarship awarded through UNCF of up to $5000.

On November 20, 2007, the front desk workers at the Hyatt Regency Penn's Landing hotel submitted their managers with a unionimous petition demanding that management be neutral in all future union organizing efforts. Hyatt has, to date, not responded to this request. They did, however, try to buy the employees: Two weeks after the petition was submitted, every front desk worker was given an immediate, inexplicably high 22% pay increase, and told not to discuss the pay raise with their coworkers. Management has launched new campaigns of discipline and worker intimidation since the petition was submitted. The front desk workers remain united, demanding that management recognize our right to respect, security, and our fair share. ..
