About me:
John Edwards was born in Seneca, South Carolina and raised in Robbins, North Carolina, a small town in the Piedmont. There John learned the values of hard work and perseverance from his father, Wallace, who worked in the textile mills for 36 years, and from his mother, Bobbie, who ran a shop and worked at the post office. Working alongside his father at the mill, John developed his strong belief that all Americans deserve an equal opportunity to succeed and be heard.
A proud product of public schools, John became the first person in his family to attend college. He worked his way through North Carolina State University where he graduated with high honors in 1974, and then earned a law degree with honors in 1977 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
For the next 20 years, John dedicated his career to representing families and children just like the families he grew up with in Robbins. Standing up against the powerful insurance industry and their armies of lawyers, John helped these families through the darkest moments of their lives to overcome tremendous challenges. His passionate advocacy for people like the folks who worked in the mill with his father earned him respect and recognition across the country.
In 1998, John took this commitment into politics to give a voice in the United States Senate to the people he had represented throughout his career. He ran for the Senate and won, defeating an incumbent Senator.
In Congress, Senator Edwards quickly emerged as a champion for the issues that make a difference to American families: quality health care, better schools, protecting civil liberties, preserving the environment, saving Social Security and Medicare, and reforming the ways campaigns are financed.
As a member of the Select Committee on Intelligence, Senator Edwards worked tirelessly for a strong national defense and to strengthen the security of our homeland. He authored key pieces of legislation on cyber, bio, and port security.
Senator Edwards brought a positive message of change to the 2004 presidential primaries. During the primary season he spoke about the two Americas that exist in our country today: one for people at the top who have everything they need and one for everybody else who struggle to get by. This powerful message resonated with voters all across America.
After the Democratic primaries, Senator John Kerry picked Senator Edwards to serve as his running mate in the 2004 general election, and Senator Edwards crisscrossed the country and campaigned tirelessly on Senator Kerry's behalf.
He is the former Director of the Center on Poverty, Work, and Opportunity at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Senator Edwards and his wife, Elizabeth, whom he met when both were law students at Chapel Hill, were married in 1977. They have had four children, including: their eldest daughter, Catharine, who is attending law school; eight-year-old Emma Claire; and a six-year-old son, Jack. Their first child, Wade, died in 1996.
Who I'd like to meet: Students and others who will join me in bringing my message to the American people.

Mr. Edwards has betrayed Michigan. He will no longer be on the ballot in Michigan. He sent a clear message yesterday that he no longer wanted our vote. The people of Iowa and New Hampshire trump Michigan voters. Perhaps, Mr. Edwards does not want Michigan votes. However, he will continue to accept Michigan money. Mr. Edwards, no doubt, knew that he would be removing his name off of the Michigan ballot prior to Tuesday. Yet, I still received a myriad of e-mails, phone calls, and text messages from the campaign expressing their desire for me to donate cash. Recently, Elizabeth Edwards was in Grand Rapids, Michigan for a house party. It only cost $250 to attend. Did she know that her husband was contemplating his removal from the Michigan ballot at this time? If so, I am certain that she made no indication of the decision that night. Why did Mrs. Edwards walk a picket line with members of the United Auto Workers in Michigan the next day? Was it because the Edwards campaign is concerned with Michigan union workers? Or was it because of the looming SEIU endorsement decision? I think Mr. Edwards answered that question yesterday.
If there are any lingering doubts of Mr. Edwards’ apathy for Michigan, his campaign manager, David Bonior has trampled them. "In these early states issues matter more than money, celebrity and advertisements. Voters want and deserve a candidate who represents real people, not corporate special interests, and this primary process will help ensure that's exactly what the American people get," Mr. Bonior stated. Perhaps, as Mr. Bonior has insinuated, Michigan is only concerned with “money” and “corporate special interests.” If this is true, it is not saying much for Mr. Bonior, who was elected to Congress by Michigan voters for 26 years. But I disagree with Mr. Edwards and Mr. Bonior. Michigan, which would greatly benefit from many of these issues, wants a candidate for all Americans.

Congress could vote in the next fews weeks on a bill that would double our greenhouse gas emissions from planes and cars. It sounds crazy, but this is exactly what will happen if a current plan to use "liquid coal" passes. Coal is the dirtiest of fossil fuels and we have a serious global warming problem.
MoveOn.org is asking everyone to sign a petition urging Congress to vote no on tax breaks and subsidies on coal.
PLEASE HELP JOHN EDWARDS' MOTHER CELEBRATE HIS BIRTHDAY!
June 1, 2007
Dear Friends,
It was nearly 54 years ago when my husband Wallace borrowed $50 to bring me and our new born boy home from the hospital back in Seneca, South Carolina. Today, a lot of people know John as an advocate, a senator, and maybe even as the next president. But Wallace and I will always know him simply as our son.
Next Sunday, June 10th, is our son John's birthday, and I'd like to ask you to help celebrate with us. Nothing would make John happier on his birthday than seeing how many people share his vision for this country and are ready to lend a hand.
We know everyone can't give a lot. But it's not about how much, it's about how many.
If every one of us gives just $6.10 to John's campaign before 6/10, we can do so much together for this country. Let's make John's birthday a celebration for America. Please add your $6.10 today:
www.johnedwards.com/birthday/pie
And what's a birthday celebration without dessert? If you're able to give $6.10 to the campaign before 6/10 I'll send you a copy of my old family recipe for pecan pie—it's quite a favorite around here.
I wish I could make enough pie to thank everyone who supports my son. But the next best thing is to send you my secret recipe and hope that on June 10th we can both enjoy a slice.
Thank you,
Bobbie Edwards
Robbins, North Carolina
P.S. Thank you so much for supporting John. Please do what you can to help him.
