Luis Valdez and the members of El Teatro Campesino present ‘ACTOS!’ directed by Kinan Valdez. ‘ACTOS!’ opens May 1 in San Juan Bautista.
Nothing represents the historical work of El Teatro Campesino better than the acto. The original ‘ACTOS’ were created to shed light on the reality of the migrant farm worker. These one-act scenarios portrayed the derogatory conditions and circumstances that Cesar Chavez, Dolores Huerta and the UFW were fighting to change in the 1960s.
A selection of historical and recent ACTOS were chosen by Luis and Kinan to be staged at the El Teatro Campesino playhouse this spring.
“Since the mission of the ACTO is to shed light on the realities of people’s lives, there is nothing more relevant than a presentation of our ACTOS, considering the current condition of the nation,” Luis Valdez said.
“ACTOS are meant to inspire the audience to social action.”
Selections include, Dos Caras del Patroncito, Tres Uvas and Quinta Temporada. This presentation of Tres Uvas makes its debut in San Juan Bautista.
Tres Uvas was created in 1965 and staged on the steps of the State Capitol in Sacramento after a UFW march. The Sacramento performance had been originally staged with an all-male cast and had never been performed since that protest rally.
Luis Valdez reworked Tres Uvas this past winter, recasting all the parts with female members of El Teatro Campesino. The San Juan Bautista debut of Tres Uvas features; Alika Spencer, Katie Hipol, Valentina Fernandez, Christy Sandoval, Jillian Mitchell and Melinna Bobadilla-Chavez.
‘ACTOS!’ opening night is Thursday May 1 with a special that is very different that most opening nights.
“We decided as a company to turn the tables on traditional theatrical opening nights by celebrating the start of our season with a ‘recession-busting’ attitude. All seats on opening night will be $5.00,” Kinan Valdez said.
