About me: MISSION: The Martínez Street Women’s Center is committed to developing a community space that provides information and services which support the active participation of women and girls in the pursuit of their own physical, emotional and social well-being throughout the lifespan.
Who I'd like to meet: HISTORY: The Martínez Street Women’s Center was founded in the summer of 1999 by a group of women from diverse professional backgrounds with a shared goal of creating a community space to promote the health and well-being of women and girls in San Antonio. Originally located in San Antonio’s King William Historic District, the Center moved in the spring of 2002 to its current eastside location on South Hackberry Street to better serve our client base.
PHILOSOPHY: We embrace the World Health Organization definition of health as a “state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” In addition, we are committed to providing services grounded in a philosophy of woman-centered healthcare. By encouraging women to obtain additional knowledge about their health, we seek to balance the power between provider and consumer.
PURPOSE: The goal of the Martinez Street Women’s Center is to serve as a resource center providing education, referrals, advocacy, and health outreach for women, their partners, and their families. Services are provided by a cross-section of lay and professional women and are culturally and economically appropriate. Our target population is women who face barriers accessing healthcare in our community. Located in a colorful community space near downtown San Antonio, the Center provides a comfortable, non-clinical setting for classes, support groups, and general meetings. Our space is available to community residents and providers who support the Center’s mission.
The Maternal and Child Health Promotora Program - our Promotoras conduct community presentations and non-traditional outreach (i.e. visiting laundromats, bus stops, etc.) to educate women and their families on health issues such as diabetes, breast health, nutrition, parenting, and lead education, just to name a few topics. Last year our Promotoras reached 12,000 San Antonio women. This year they are targeted to exceed this figure.
Studio4FM - is a primary prevention, after school program serving 10-14 year old girls in San Antonio's southeast side. Offering a variety of programming such as art projects facilitated by many of the local artists we all know, enrichment activities such as poetry, physical activities such as basketball and self-defense, and comprehensive sexual education, Studio4FM is an invaluable asset to our community.
The Martinez Street Women's Center is also on target to begin offering in May 2007: Case Management services assisting San Antonio families in need, an Emergency Food Bank, and we are proud to announce that through our EPA Lead Education Grant and partnership with LeadSafe San Antonio, we have put our first family in temporary housing while their house undergoes lead abatement and renovation free of charge

second saturday semillas is an event on the ninth of may that will raise funds for a free music, dance, and theatre school for our inner city youth in San antonio. Our goal is to take the wealth of resources we collectively have as artists and redistribute it to our youth at no cost to them. The money raised at this event will go to paying the artists that hold the lessons and workshops. We also plan on building a budget to supply those that can not afford it, their instruments, dancing clothes, shoes, supplies, etc..... The classes will be all ages and accessible to everyone.
A healthy meal from Big Kahuna is included in the suggested donation to get in to the event and the entertainment will also be slammin'.
