CD Review - Cryo Genics, Punk Fucking Rock (Oi Oi Vincey Boy)

Cryo-Genics, a three piece Lincolnshire based close knit family consisting of Ruby (lead guitar) Col (drums) and Sid (lead vocals). After several experimental flase starts, this lineup seems to have settled down in May 2009.

The band are totally DIY, and are from the same direction as some of the bands in their supported portfolio including the likes of Discharge and Broken bones, and taking particular inspiration from The Exploited.The band are clearly doing this for fun, and seem to be making little if any money out of this, doing it purely for the love and passion of the scene.

Ruby contacted me to excitedly ask for me to have a listen to the bands first live demo, which of course I was more than happy to do.

Punk Fucking Rock is a 5 track live introduction to the band and reminds me of the old sound captured on the bootleg cassette tapes I used to buy back in the early 80s.

I think that maybe I have become a little spoiled with the readiness of the modern day recording techniques, and the fact that it is now so much easier for the smaller under-dog bands to have a good quality studio release I feel I have become a little soft with the raw home made sound and not being able to fully appreciate it for what it is.

I take my hat off to the band, putting together the release and distributing it to anyone who would like a copy free of charge!, and yes it has some catchy tunes, and I think is a good insight into what the band are about and a good start to something that looks like blossoming, definately an excellent effort as a taster.

For those that love the discharge and exploited old school raw punk rock sound, I think they will love this, and for me, I am going to sit back and patiently wait for the studio release. One thing I am confident of is that with the passion these guys have and the love of what they are doing, this is just the start of some bloody good raw punk rock to come.
