About me: We are Corpus Christi's only derby league.
In July, 2005, a group of local women began skating together and discussing the possibility of starting a local D-I-Y roller derby league. Some of the women had been on trips to Austin and had become familiar with a new form of social interaction and entertainment: all woman roller derby. The local group evolved and organized themselves and after a lot of growing pains Hurricane Alley Roller Derby, LLC was born on Halloween... October 31, 2005!
Hurricane Alley is skater owned and operated. We are strictly run “by the skaters - for the skaters." The skaters skate for free and in this way we will be able to support the community that supports us by giving a portion of the proceeds from every bout to charity.
We welcome any woman over the age of 18 who wants to participate regardless of age, vocation, or skating ability. We need women of ALL shapes and sizes! We are also looking for dedicated men and women who are willing to act as referees, stat keepers, announcers, production crew, security, etc. The recruiting process is never-ending!
Make no mistake: the Hurricane Alley Roller Derby skaters see this as a competitive sport. We take the competition very seriously and are currently honing our individual styles during the exhibition season. We've had a lot of support from leagues who are more established, especially the Lonestar Rollergirls in Austin. Many people donated their time and expertise to get us going on the proper blocks, drills and moves used in roller derby.
The women of Hurricane Alley are excited and thankful to have the support of many local businesses and the interest of many potential supporters. We are striving to foster additional support as we continue with our exhibition season.
