Stylus / Amanacer / Healing Fields @ Clapham Grand
If there was any justice in the world, the Clapham Grand would be thought of as the south London equivalent of the Shepherds Bush Empire - a great 1500-odd capacity venue with awesome sound (and an ideal location for giant bands to charge a sky-high fee for that intimate gig on the tour). Oasis have just announced theyre playing here, lets hope more bands follow suit (without the £35 price tag). A small crowd is gathering at the front of the stage, the first band is about to emerge. Will they have the sound to match the venue?

Two down, one to go. It hasnt, thus far, been a night to cherish. STYLUS have also had their set cut down to less than twenty five minutes so after hearing the opening bars of Slipping Away, it makes you want to kill whoever made that decision. They sound better than ever. Brims guitar work reaches dizzy heights on the newer songs Kicking out ya Mouth and an as-yet-untitled tune and Daves seemingly new vocal style on the former has to make it the track of the night, especially when you combine that with the heaviest and catchiest drum beat that the band has ever produced. Bands like the Smiths and Stone Roses still spring to mind when listening to Stylus but now you can add Kasabian and even a hint of The Stooges to the mix. The members of the audience that were here for the earlier bands had fled to the bar before Stylus had even started, that all changed two songs into the set and before too long, the band received the attention they deserved; they have, after all, rescued the night. Over the past twelve months, it seems guitar music has, once again, become an acceptable genre to dance to; this surely must be the time for Stylus to shine. It should be an interesting year.

Stylus @ Gossips
Watching Stylus on stage tonight is a bit like taking a history lesson on classic British bands. On the left youll find its 1986, with guitarist, Brim, playing the kind of stuff thatd receive the Johnny Marr nod of approval. A few steps behind him and both drummer, Mark, and bassist, Simon, are partying like its 1989, not only playing like Reni and Mani respectively, they come complete with baggy-style outfits and Madchester posturing. Frontman Dave, however, is busy belting out every track like a rock n roll star in 1995, yep, hes Liam Gallagher. In fact, his voice is so Liam-like at times, you half expect him to be donning a single eyebrow and waving a tambourine.

Now, dont be fooled into thinking these boys are just another drab, Britpop-wannabe embarrassment because you couldnt be more wrong. Stylus make the kind of thrilling, upbeat music that quickly restores your faith in the British rock scene. Opening track, "Slipping away" is quite brilliant, with a thumping intro reminiscent of Doves "Pounding", while "Never gonna let u go" could easily be a lost Oasis song from the "Definitely, Maybe" era. Within the first seven minutes of the night, they demonstrate more zeal and purpose than Kelly Jones has managed in the past seven years.

The crowd loves it and the bands confidence grows as a result; Brim starts flexing his creative muscles while Simons onstage movement goes from mere head nodding to a full on groove, one which soon has him in fear of drowning in his own sweat.

Consistency is certainly a Stylus characteristic and only "U could be the one" fails to deliver, its far too long and even the impressive guitar work in the closing stages cant quite rescue it. Following that, however, is the night's high-point. "Is this how you feel?" is the kind of anthem youd expect from a band touring the globe, not one based in Clapham Junction. It has just about everything a killer drumbeat, a bassline straight out of head-bopping heaven, superb guitar and a quite euphoric, Liam-esque, cry of "Yeah yeah yeah!" What more could you ask for?

With the majority of Brits still wary of any homegrown guitar music that doesnt involve a piano, string section or spandex, Stylus have certainly got their work cut out, but if they continue to write first-class tunes like this, theyll surely prove too good to ignore. Top stuff.

Pete Whiley.

Wednesday October 11: Stylus @ Clapham Grand

Almost didn't make this one - walked through the doors at The Grand as Stylus
struck into their opening chords. This is a great venue but suffers with its size and unless there's a couple of hundred people in there, it's impossible for an act to gather any interest or maintain any energy. It should be impossible but Stylus just don't know how to give less than 100%, even at 7.30 on a Wednesday evening. Full of energy - NME may have started calling it Nu-Baggy since Kasabian made their splash, but this is groove-driven indie pop-rock at its best. Stylus don't get as dark as Kasabian do but they inhabit the same space, with more frequent nods to Oasis, Dodgy, The Charlatans, Suede and Stone Roses but without really sounding like any of them.

I know that life gets in the way but it's criminal these guys don't play more and get themselves seen by more people because when they do - at Shepherds Bush Empire, Carling Islington Academy and at Guilfest over the past three years - they've proven that they can reach out to a big crowd at a big venue. There's talk of spending some money in the studio soon and cutting a new EP. I hope they do – the new material sits really well with the stuff they've been playing over the past couple of years and it will give them a good platform to get heard by more people.
