"Immer wieder nett diese Retrokapellen, welche in „Eins zu Eins“-Umsetzung die Sechziger wiederauferstehen lassen. Auch die Österreicher The Subcandies verstehen dies sehr gut und präsentieren auf ihrem Debütalbum eine muntere Mixtur aus Einflüssen, wie den psychedelischen Beatles, Steppenwolf, 13th Floor Elevators, Chocolate Watchband und einem Haufen anderer der Zeitspanne von 1966-68. Der erste Song des Albums scheint zunächst zwar noch ein wenig schwerfällig, aber schon der zweite Titel haut gut rein und wird unter Garantie alle Späthippies in Ost und West, Nord und Süd die Hüften schwingen lassen. Markant für die Band sind durchweg sehr eingängige, wenn auch recht kurze Melodien (Durchschnittslänge der Songs liegt bei drei Minuten) und ein deutlicherer Hang zur Psychedelik als z.B. bei Artverwandtem wie The Magnificent Brotherhood. Auch der eher etwas schmutzige Garage Drive gefällt mir persönlich sehr gut und das Album macht mit jeder verstrichenen Minute Bock auf mehr, wenn auch in erster Linie Fans der genannten Bands hier ihre Freude haben werden. Nicht zuletzt die Vinyl-only Produktion sollte auch klarmachen, das hier vor allem Musik von Freaks für Freaks gemacht wird. Unter den neun Songs des Albums, befinden sich übrigens vier schon einmal auf Singles veröffentlichte Titel, welche jedoch, zumindest laut Info, sehr schnell ausverkauft waren. Muss ich noch mehr sagen? Sixtiesfreunde SOLLTEN hier reinhören... zumal man diese Band auch noch live erleben kann." Christian Peters from

"Hätte eigentlich auch das Zeug gehabt zum Album des Monats, diese erste Langspielplatte der Subcandies aus Wien. Am 29. Februar stellten sie die Scheibe hier in Berlin live vor. Toller Gig! Tolle Band! Gute Stimmung. Es wurde von Anfang an getanzt vor der Bühne. Wie sich das gehört. Und wer „Father’s Name Is Dad“ im Repertoire hat, hat meine größten Sympathien. Die LP besteht leider nur zur Hälfte aus neuem Material. Aus ökonomischen Gründen kann man das verstehen. Wer aber bereits beide Singles der Band hat und sogar noch den Detour Sampler Vol. 3, der hört nur auf Seite 1 Neues. Wer diese bereits vergriffenen Platten verpennt hat freut sich nun, dass er die verpassten Tracks doch noch bekommt. Für alle, die die bereits veröffentlichten Tracks nicht kennen, beginnen wir bei Seite 2. „Hey You“ ist ein prima Opener, uptempo, mit viel Druck und Energie vorgetragen. Ein echter Stomper im Stil der Chesterfield Kings oder Miracle Workers. „Out Of Here“ ist dagegen fast „sophisticated“ mit seinem gepflegten E-Piano und dem leicht gedrosselten Tempo. „Little Man“ ist eine typische Artpop Nummer. Eine dezente Wah Wah Gitarre korrespondiert mit einer hübschen Kinderliedmelodie. „Hey Jules“ ist natürlich noch immer die großartige selbst geschriebene Hommage an so vieles Erinnerungswürdige der Sixties, von Hendrix bis Lennon, von Pop Art bis Psych Pop. Und „Dirty Names“ schließt die LP ab mit einer weiteren selbst verfassten Eloge auf ein exaltiertes und überdrehtes Bohème Leben. Auf der ersten Seite der Platte ist das neuere Material zu hören. Der Titelsong „Out Of The Blue“ eröffnet die LP mit einer vielleicht programmatischen Stellungnahme, die sich musikalisch am Besten orientiert, was der britische Beat um 1967/68 hervorbrachte. Eher beschaulich wie bei Ray Davies etwa. Bei „Over Your Shoulder“ wird dann das Tempo gesteigert und die Gitarrensaiten werden mächtig gedehnt und gezerrt. US Garage lässt grüßen. „Captain John“ beginnt mit einem ganz ähnlichen Gitarrenlauf wie „My Friend Jack“, nimmt dann aber auch eher Kurs auf San Francisco und Acid Rock. „Give It A Try“ ist wieder eher konventioneller Britbeat mit groovender Orgel, gespielt von der schönen Katerina aus Griechenland. „Take A Chance“ lässt noch einmal die späten Sixties Revue passieren und blickt zugleich in das folgende Jahrzehnt, in dem aus Beat Rockmusik wurde. „Out Of The Blue“ ist eine sehr gelungene Platte. Wer sich beeilt bekommt sie eventuell noch in blauem Vinyl. ****"(review by Guitars galore early 2008)
With their first 7" vinyl release in 2005 (Hey you/Out of here, dobrotec records) the subcandies have set a new milestone in the annals of garage, they..re hell of 60s garage punkers, as music mags are saying all over Europe. This release is almost sold out but...
... you still might get a red colored vinyl from the 2nd single, issued in 2007.
