About me: SUB/HITTERS COLLECTIVE is a culturally diverse, urban based, international alliance of percussionists, hoofers (traditional term for “tap dancers”), musicians and artists, based mainly in New York City and Chicago. The collective was conceived and founded by MAURICE (REESE) CARR, a drummer, percussionist and producer from the Southside of Chicago, and includes DOLORES (LOLA) SANCHEZ, a hoofer and dancer from Indiana, as co-founder. Sub/hitters also includes YUICHI IIDA, a percussionist from Japan, PARKER HALL, a hoofer from Connecticut, MIKE BURNEY, a DJ from New Jersey, MAUD ARNOLD, a hoofer from Washington D.C., CK, a Hoofer from Texas, LISA LATOUCHE, a hoofer from Toronto and Chicago, ILYA JANOS, a percussionist also from Texas, JUSTIN WILLIAMS, a Videographer and editor from Baltimore (CHECK OUT HIS WORK IN THE FIRST OBAMA VIDEO BELOW), IRIEMIAH, a master percussionist from Jamaica, and DJ CANDIDO, a DJ from Upper Manhattan, as other core members.
Sub/hitters first evolved as an underground movement…literally…in the subways of New York City, where Maurice and Dolores met in 2006, and began street performing together. Once their special chemistry was established, Maurice began pulling other percussionists he’d previously been street performing with into the mix, while Dolores began pulling in other hoofers she knew, and the movement has been steadily growing ever since. Different culturally and stylistically diverse combinations of percussionists, dancers, and other musicians, such as members from Reese’s band, PAGODA, all come together, to push the art form, by combining their eclectic mix of styles, thus breaking open the pre-conceived barriers of “genre”. For example, two Djembe drummers, might get together with a Latin conga player, a hoofer, and a break dancer, or a DJ, an M.C., a human beat box, and a poet, might get together with a bucket drummer, hoofer, bassist, cellist and lap steel, acoustic or electric guitar player, to create a new sound and energy, which is still very natural and uncontrived.
Sub/hitters have had the privilege of playing in some of the finest venues around the city, as well as around the world, such as The Box, The Apollo, Radio City Music Hall and Lincoln Center.
The Sub/hitters movement is devoted to ‘arts activism’. Whether bringing their music,
(referred to as “Visual High Endurance Percussion”), directly to the streets, or to parties and events, or conducting rhythm workshops at schools, the facilities of the elderly, mentally or economically disadvantaged, or performing at political rallies and protests, Sub/hitters always focus their collaborative energy on promoting cultural diversity, world consciousness, freedom of expression, and healing of the spirit and soul, through 'roots and rhythm'. The rhythm/art/dance/culture movement is still very much alive, and worldwide, so "GET INTO IT...GET INVOLVED!!!"
*THE SUB/HITTERS COLLECTIVE is currently available for shows, events, parties and workshops. We conduct extensive weekly rhythm therapy workshops/classes for children in elementary and middle school, as well as adults. We also provide rhythm therapy services for mentally and/or physically disadvantaged children, adults, and senior citizens. We will come to your facility, or even bring personal rhythm clinics directly to your home. Our rhythm workshop, entitled "A Journey through Rhythm" is a hands-on interactive clinic, teaching the history of rhythm, as well as the many different ways it can be expressed and manifested. The clinic features professional drummers, percussionists, hoofers, MC's, poets, and even cast members from the acclaimed
off-broadway show, “Stomp”.
