In December of 2004, guitarist Royce Miller and vocalist Lee Anderson met through a mutual acquaintance. After exchanging portfolios of music, and each determining that the other was indeed “metal” enough, they began working together in what they assumed would be a casual musical endeavor. Only years later did they realize exactly what they had started.
Royce and Lee experimented with song-writing and recording techniques for the first few months of 2005 in their hometown of Okmulgee, OK. During that time, they created an EP consisting of a handful of industrial death metal songs. Confident in their creation, they handed out 300 free copies of the EP at a high profile metal concert in nearby Tulsa, OK under the name Submerged In Dirt. The free EP was very well received, as were free downloads of the music posted on websites like myspace.com and download.com.
As they churned out new songs, Submerged In Dirt started getting live show offers, but without a live band, those offers would have to wait. In early 2006, Royce and Lee started the search for the right members to bring their music to the stage. The task wasn’t an easy one, with the only exception being the drummer.
Drummer James Hardy was recruited in the summer of 2006. He was the “founding drummer” and remains with the band today. A metal-head at heart, James was playing for a “middle-of-the-road” pop rock group and was unhappy with the stylistic restriction this placed on him. His love of pure heavy metal led him to Submerged In Dirt and while his tryout was completely impromptu, James had no trouble playing even the fastest and most technical of songs, which had previously been recorded with a drum machine. He has a work ethic unmatched by his peers and has been known to spend several months writing and perfecting his drum parts.
Once a more-than-adequate drummer had been found, the search for 2nd guitar took precedence. After working with more than a few guitarists, none of which were completely dedicated to the band, Lee called an old friend to try out. In late 2007, Ryan Painter assumed the duties of 2nd guitar quite easily. His lightning fast chops and precision picking are now a highly recognizable part of the music created by this band. Arguably the most laid back member of the band, Ryan is always ready to shred it up and drink one down afterward, with anyone and everyone.
The final position to be filled permanently was that of the bassist. Justin McCall originally joined the band very early in its formation, but in September of 2007, he had to move to another state for about a year to fulfill work-related obligations. During this time, Grant Lohrey held down the bass parts. After signing with Turkey Vulture Records in October 2008, it was decided that the working relationship with Grant would end, and that Justin would return to the fold. Justin McCall is the low-end backbone of Submerged In Dirt. The skill necessary to play these bass parts is hard to attain unless, like Justin, you were born with it.
In early and recent years, the core of Submerged In Dirt’s sound centered around the musical writing style of Royce Miller. Adventurous songs like “Godstorm”, “Deep Fork Revival” and “Sterile Room” grabbed the attention of listeners and defined the style for which the band would be known. But with each new step, the sound evolves. As each member grows in technique, his styles are being incorporated into the song writing and the overall sound of the band matures. Today, Submerged In Dirt sounds more like a precision sonic assault than a band. Amidst the brutality, strange beauty and coherent musical structure permeate the new songs, adding another level of enjoyment for the listener.
Lee Anderson’s singing technique has evolved into a terrifying abstraction of human vocal ability. But it somehow remains just decipherable enough to understand the words to the demented manifestos and “not quite science fiction” theories, which comprise a typical Submerged In Dirt song. Despite sounding like a demon among angels, Lee is a surprisingly well-mannered and articulate young man, who just so happens to be able to command a venue full of pissed off metal heads to do his bidding.
The common goal among the members of Submerged In Dirt has always been to write the best metal songs possible and get them to the people in anyway possible, whether through free demos, free downloads, live performance, etc… Signing with Turkey Vulture Records is a step that will make this goal even more of a reality. The band’s forthcoming debut album will be called “IN THE GRIP OF THE MACHINE” and will contain 10 brand-new recordings of dynamic ideas and creative expression in the form of blisteringly fast and brutal music.
