In the 1920's Subterranean served as both a brothel on the second and third floors and a wire room for gambling on the first floor. History says Al Capone once was a regular at the bar. The basement has boarded up secret passages that were used to flee from the authorities.
Currently, Subterranean is a bar and music venue in the heart of Wicker Park on the six corners. It is known for presenting all genres of music and welcomes local and touring acts.
Alarm Magazine writes:
Subterranean:
Housed in an overgrown three flat in Wicker Park, Subterranean has become a favorite in the Chicago concert circuit, hosting both local and national acts. The first floor contains a restaurant and nightclub featuring two open mic nights (notably hip hop on Tuesdays) and various DJs throughout the week. Upstairs is a two-tiered concert hall with a balcony wrapping around the main floor. Come early to get a good spot in the long, narrow room on busy nights or pretend you are "looking for your friend" in the first row to get up close. Works like a charm every time
For great food and music check out our sister venue BEAT KITCHEN in the heart of Roscoe Village!!
