Do you know TED? Technology, Entertainment, Design is an annual conference of notable thinkers and doers - the essence being that all their presentations must be no longer than 17 minutes which keeps them efficient, elegant and entertaining. And if you can't cough up the $6,000 to attend the presentations in person, don't fret - it's the 21st Century and they're all on the web... Like this one - Dan Dennett speaking on "Ants, Terrorism and Memes"...
Uncle Ken Nordine, peeling back the holy workings of the universe with his crepuscular wisdom... "Fibonacci Numbers"
If you're an artist, then spend 9 minutes and watch this.
(And ignore the clueless, primping interview girl...)
The great, late (hardly) Bill Hicks, throwing his last message in a bottle to us. Amen.
Jason Hadley makes cool stuff that ain't never been before...
It's a wonderful age, this Information Age. Totally better than the Bronze Age. Rarest of rare video coagulating on YouTube... Lord Buckely putting down his Satchmo impression...
God, I love YouTube...
LA's jewel, or maybe bakelite brooch, Eleni Mandell...
Carl Jung speaking on the apprehension-filled dreams of the 20th Century... "The only real danger that exists is man himself."
Check out this incredible footage of Eugene V. Debs from 1904. Not the original soundtrack, obviously, but an actor reading one of Debs' speeches on wax cylinder. A hundred years later and Capital has maintained worldwide dominance and resource control while Labor remains fragmented, powerless. And humans are still just economic resources with assessed values to be outsourced wherever the price is best.
"Globalization" sounds so positive, huh?
Like, dig some rare video of Lord Buckley rappin' it w/ Groucho...
....
Sometimes YouTube is like finding God's holy boogers under the pew of cyberspace.
What, you wouldn't drink God's tinkle? Heretic.
"Pull My Daisy".
..
When Thomas "Fats" Waller was 14 his mother died in bed. She was so huge the fire department had to cut open the wall of their 4th floor Harlem apartment and lift her body out with a crane.
But then they dropped her.
Splat.
It may have affected him, no?
One never knows, do one?
....
Assassination? I've mentioned this possibility to all kinds of people and no one has disagreed... Maybe as Americans we all know the character of America. Maybe, when you strip away the media crust, as Americans we all understand the new era an Obama presidency offers America.
Television
..
Bah-ha-ha-ha-ha!
TV is the scourge of civilization.
Heroes
.. Ken Nordine, Lord Buckley, Tom Waits, Jack Kerouac, Woody Guthrie, The Coen Brothers, The Marx Brothers, Kurt Vonnegut, William James, Carl Jung, Charlie Leeds, Raymond Carver, Jack Benny, Jimmy Durante, Chuck Niles, The Shadow, Harry Lime, Welmon Sharlhorne

Subterranea is the light at the End of the World.
It’s a two-hour left-hook of bitter optimism.
It’s the fresh crawlspace in a burning building.
Subterranea is the sound of an envelope carrying good news.
It’s the megaphone of silence in the din of media mendacity.
Subterranea is the organic fertilizer pinched in the middle of LA’s astroturf airwaves.

At the intersection of Tuesday Night and Wednesday Morning lies "Subterranea".
Broadcasting across Los Angeles, "Subterranea" is a one-of-a-kind radio show built on a foundation of spoken word, poetry, and soundscapes. For a hundred and twenty minutes, your host, Matt, free-associates across themes, rhythms and melodies to create a show unlike any other in Southern California.
Recorded performances by writers like Kerouac and Ginsberg, Bukowski, Ken Nordine, Lord Buckley, Gil Scott-Heron, Wanda Coleman and John Sinclair are all mixed together with music from the likes of Tom Waits, Woody Guthrie, Howlin’ Wolf, Steve Earle, Jolie Holland and the Eels.
Whether you’re in your car or at home, you’re always in the depths of "Subterranea". Make yourself comfortable.

Luke Lukas is back with an album full of that gleeful gloom that made us love him at first sight. His trustworthy 4-tracks and him go their separate ways so he's now presenting 12 perfectly arranged folk songs to us. Luke reveals himself as a kind soul, but like the western movies taught us, a dreadful killer always hides under every placid looking Texan.
"Leaving his strongly lo-fi sound that impressed us the first time, he treasures the recipe, packing in this new plain, delightful work a caring love for vocals, which are worthy of Neutral Milk hotel, with a touch of Chordettes feel."Daniele Dileo - Lab Magazine
