........June 18,2003 ,Mr. Jalil and Mr.Mrs.Rashida Jabbar started J&R Grassroots, a non-profit group dedicated to helping local musicians.
Mrs.Rashida entered the music industry as an attempt to keep a watchful eye on her son who entered the music industry as a rap artist, she began to notice it’s unsavory side. She noticed the violence in the music, drug abuse and objectification of young women. Which she did not aprove of from her son or any of the other youth in the music industry.
However, instead of turning the other cheek like so many others, Mr.Jalil and Mrs.Rashida was compelled to do something about it something that in the end could make a world of a difference, hence, they became the Founder's of J&R Grassroots Teen Artist Development which began in the living room of their Philadelphia home.
Mrs.Rashida earned a reputation as a credible and informative source of the music industry for the youth and Mr.Jalil as a positive role model . As crime and drugs were claiming the lives of our youth, neighborhood kids migrated to her home using it as a safe haven for escape and eager to soak up the insight she provided.
Initially, youth would come to her seeking advice about music and their artistry. But she noticed most of the youth lacked, not only the savvy needed to become successful and long-lasting artists, but they also lacked stable homes, supportive environments and the ability to read or write.
Eventually, they took on the demand of more youth, and began weekly meetings that covered topics ranging from personal growth and excellence, education math and reading, antiviolence and drug prevention to AIDS/HIV awareness.
The Jabbar's remains loyal to their belief of education through positive role modeling.
With the continual fragmentation of the family, immediate and extended, with more than three generations of babies having babies (12-17 year generational gap), government and community agencies are overloaded and youth, neglected, abused, victims of violence, are falling between the society’s cracks. J&R targets these disenfranchised children by meeting their essential needs and empowering them through positive use of the entertainment industry which dominates their thoughts, patterns, and behaviors.,
J&R Grassroots provides refuge for youth who fall through the cracks of “the system”. We use the entertainment industry to nurture and grow talent as well as educate youth and young adults from academics to life lessons of respect, responsibility, community service, and even etiquette.,
J&R Grassroots Teen Artist Development participants continue working on their recording projects delivering their newly learned messages of positively and triumph in the face of obstacles,
