    James's Interests
GeneralA Sunday walk in the woods is considered my supplement to (or substitution for) morning mass. I love the outdoors and know more trails in the Capital Region, Berkshires and Catskills than I know people. Hudson Valley and Massachusetts wineries are also favorite destinations. I'm also an avid reader and something of an "art junkie," who can never walk pass an art gallery, museum or used bookstore without walking in.
MusicNot long ago, the Canadian singer/songwriter Jane Siberry (a.k.a. Issa) dethroned Bruce Springsteen in my CD player. I'm still amazed I can still drive into Jersey without the state police harassing me. I also like Counting Crows, Toad the Wet Sprocket, Pearl Jam, Garbage, Lisa Loeb, Tori Amos and Charlotte Martin.
MoviesSince I was 10 years old, my favorite movie has been "Dances with Wolves." I was even younger when "Joe Versus the Volcano" made a strange impression on me. Loved "Before Sunset."
TelevisionGilmore Girls
BooksI read too much. That's what happens when you don't have cable. Sometimes I think the world is cruel because I cannot fit an entire library in my tote bag. My favorite novel is Tolstoy's "Anna Karenina." His "War and Peace" was a slog, but so good. Sara Teasedale tops my list of favorite poets, followed by Louise Gluck, Linda Gregg, Jane Hirshfield and Arthur Symons. And don't forget the Chinese Li Po and Wang Wei. Kierkegaard could be considered family in the realm of logos, along with Thomas Merton, Paulus Tillich and Rollo May.
HeroesHenry David Thoreau

I guess I'm what could be called a "nature poet." I have always striven to write poetry in such a way where what I feel blends into a landscape, as though it is no longer possible to tell where my life ends and the world begins. I write as though I a

About me:
Catching fireflies and picking wild raspberries are still activities I find irresistible. Come the first spring rain, I am already dreaming of picking apples in autumn. My greatest fear is that too many days will pass without being cherished; that blue sky will become a stranger to my gaze; that I will forget the sweet pungent fragrance of purple clover. I have a knack for finding beauty in the damnedest places and for tossing a frisbee. I am a journalist by trade and a poet at heart. I love my job, work hard at it. Yet it is my livelihood, not my life. I am independent, bookish and a bit old-fashioned. Write letters. Quiet, in the way that listens. I fit into that old saying: a mature man should have two or three good friends, and many books. My sophistication extends to the ability to pair wine with pizza.
Who I'd like to meet:
Rory Gilmore, Linda Gregg.

Happy Birthday, old friend!!! (Don't take the "old" the wrong way.)

Sidenote: Just found out this morning that my roommates haven't paid any rent since I moved in, so we're all being evicted. Apparently, they've just been taking, and spending, my money every month! People suck!

Yesterday, we had quite an unusual weather event: a hailstorm. Maybe it wasn't of Biblical proportions, but it was still the most severe one I've ever seen.

My cats were acting funny as I read a Patterson novel yesterday afternoon, as the winds outside my window picked up speed dramatically and thunderclaps could be heard in approach. I began to put on my shoes and heard the first drops of rain begin to hammer the small roof outside a large window in my second-floor crash pad. I began to hear several people screaming outside - surprised by the sudden downpour? It sounded a whole lot more like screams of pain.

Tiny was digging at the front door; when I opened it, he ran down the stairs in a panic, staying close to the railing on his left. Even though I thought he was trying to get outside, this was not the case - at the bottom of the stairs , he made a sharp left, staying pressed against the wall, evetentually cramming himself behind a screen propped against the wall. He was trying to stay low.

I opened the door to run outside - my car window was open! - and realized immediately that the rain was not water, but jagged pieces of ice falling from the sky, interdispersed by raindrops. I stuck my head and shoulders out and saw a neighbor on his porch; then a piece of ice struck my open door and hit me in the face. I backed in a little and continued to watch.

Punctuated by thunderclaps, the ice had begun to fall faster until it appeared a blizzard had come to Kingston in July. Except these snowflakes were striking the ground like bullets and were pinging the shit out of my car. As the intensity deepened, the ice balls grew to the size of shooter marbles.

And then it was over, but the ground was covered with the ice balls. Some were golf-ball size. I couldn't help worrying about people walking the street. I thought of motorcyclists on the Thruway.

The ice melted quickly on the hot July pavement, but even an hour later, the balls were still p

Sorry I'm gonna miss you today - I'm at work.

I wish I'd known sooner that I was coming here today... my office is in Stone Ridge, and I would have loved to show it off to you guys. I'm all by myself today!

If you somehow get this before coming down, I'm at the Ulster County Press, on the left side of route 209 about two miles past Emmanuel's Plaza.

If not, I'll talk to you soon. Enjoy your wine!!!!!
