SUCK MY LEFT ONE ON FRIDAY 24th APRIL @ THE SUBCULTURE!
When Bar Phono closed its doors in late 2005, those (ir)responsible for the grrrl-centric pussy whipped, trashy-queer-indie razzmatazz club nights, and DIY manifesta collective, decided to join forces to create a new night at Soul Circus, Suck My Left One. Then in January 2007 Soul Circus burned down and, dodging the bidding wars between various trendy corporate clubs, we hot footed it to the Common Place a fantastic venue where we can make our own space and dance in the cinema...
The manifesto
We are the bored scene agitators, DIY feminist/queer cultural activists, zine-devotees, ladyfesters, radical knitters, faithful dancers, mix tape lovers, house party losers, and we are not cool. We want a place where pleasure, politics and music mingle in one space, where voices of dissent lie over beats, synchronised dance routines and alcoholic drinks. We think musical genres were made to be ripped, cut up, and pasted back in ways that leave us begging for more, from queercore, riot grrrl, punk, rock n roll, electro-pop-queer-beat, to indie-trash-glam-randomness. It's the sound of the bedroom dancefloor revolution as we play songs that make your heart beat just that little bit faster. We want to create a space free from the intimidating, hipster, leeds-as-next-big-thing, dress coded, soul-sucking, profit-making mediocrity. Hegemony = enemy. They can just go and Suck Our Left One.
We welcome ladies, gentlemen, grrrls and queers of all genders, persuasions, shapes and sizes to dance recklessly without fear of ridicule, twat-titude or evaluation

Wavves Straight outta California on their first ever tour. You’ll feel like a frisky 19 year at some awesome beach party as their blown-out, catchy as hell pop washes into your ears. Touring as a duo, but really the brainchild of some 22 year old, you’ll find Wavves records out on De Stijl, Tic Tac Totally and Woodsist. There’s some Doo Wop, JAMC, No Age stuff going on here. Pens Three young girls outta London, who have a real knack for writing total tunes. On tour with Wavves, they also have an LP coming out the on De Stijl in the US following a sold out tape and 7″. Easily one of the best new UK bands. Mazes So the new crop of UK bands are here, fitting with all the killer stuff coming out of America right now and these kids have gone and written some of the best songs of the whole bunch. As well as all that stuff and some Pavement, they’ve also got an ear open to the likes of Swell Maps and Television Personalities. From Manchester, this will be their first show. Hipshakes Fastest, trashest band you’ll ever see. From their chaotic live show, you’ll just make out some real snappy pop gems under their tinnitus triggering wall of guitar noise. Just out of their teens and have already released an LP - with a 2nd on the way and 8 7″ singles, one on the Black Lips own label, another on an Oblivians Goner imprint - yeah they’re a Garage Punk band!
SAT 28TH FEB. AT THE FENTON, LEEDS. DOORS 7.30PM. ENTRY IS FIVE POUNDS
Reassess Your Weapons zine needs contributions and submissions for it’s tenth issue.
I didn’t have time to push to get the zine together in time for Zinefest (sorry!), so the deadline has been put back giving time for many more submissions to roll in. Please do contribute if you can.
As always, general submissions are hugely sought after, as well as submissions around this issue’s theme: Boundaries.
The theme developed from the need to recognise and respect boundaries in order to effectively and comfortably work within, and contribute collectively to our communities. However, please feel free to contribute by exploring any ways in which boundaries affect or influence you. Or around the theme of boundaries in general – social, political, geographical, work-based, private, public, etc. etc. Submissions can be in any form – from written discussion, tips, illustrations, personal experience, whatever!
Also, something that we started in Issue 9 was collecting together a section of recommendations. If there’s something you’ve come across or love that you would like to spread the word about and recommend to the readers of RAYW, please feel free to write a short piece (about two sentences) about it. Examples from issue nine included books, tea, mooncups, humour, films, podcasts, that sort of thing.
Reassess Your Weapons zine developed from the Manifesta feminist and queer DIY collective in Leeds, UK but has grown into a wider collective, contributions based zine, which is looking for submissions from friends and supporters of Manifesta’s feminist ethos. To learn more about Manifesta, please visit: www. myspace. com/manifestaleeds or www. manifesta. co. uk (the largely out of date website)
To contribute, or for more information, please contact: reassessyrweapons@manifesta.co.uk

BONFIRE MADIGAN Weds 17th December, Brudenell Social Club, Leeds. £5 OTD 8pm Supports: The Seven Inches + 1TBC.
A rare rare UK show from this avant-pop, chamber-punk trailblazer. Armed with dynamic vocals and innovative, self-styled cello virtuosity Madigan ignites the Bonfire with a shebeen of soul-art-string-sounds. Madigan has previously played with seminal riot grrl band Tattle Tale and is a founding collective member of the autonomous mental health collective ‘The Icarus Project’ www. theicarusproject. net
‘Bonfire Madigan play baroque-folk punk grounded on frontwoman Madigan Shive’s soaring lullaby vocals and virtuoso cello skills. Shive, a master of tone and mood, crafts songs with raw, emotional melodies and powerful, unexpected dynamics. ’ - New York Press

The trouble and the glue are Toni and Manuela and they create their own take on Euro-dance party with drums, keyboards, and things with lots of knobs and wires. They wowed us last year supporting Partyline and have since supported the likes of An Albatross, AIDS Wolf and Japanther. They are fascinated by animals with faces and embarrasing problems.
The Jelas are an excitable bunch who form experimental, angular and dissonant sounds into catchy, infectious, but ever-changing songs. Appropriate references shamelessly lifted off their Myspace would include Deerhoof, The Slits, and Huggy Bear.
Sponge Wings have emerged from the charity shops of Wakefield with keyboards and drums and play songs powered by AA batteries and liquorice, along the lines of Matt and Kim and the Unicorns.
Sic Alps - San Fransisco two piece setting the bar for bands doing the modern psych/folk/sloptastic JAMC sound. What sets Sic Alps apart from the rest is their unique ability to mash the rough edge of the folk strum, cutting songs with razor sharp candor, and artfully landing somewhere between flowery optimism and filthy regret. Stylistically, they're are all over the place too, incorporating jazzy freak outs, the sincere tinkering of piano keys, and muddy, down-trodden rhythms. Not easily pinned down into a specific sound or genre, Sic Alps reiterate their freedom of form with each successive release. With a musical pedigree second to none, with both members doing time in such outfits as Coachwhips, Hospitals and Total Shutdown. Already notorious for their exciting and energetic live performances, they've released music on Mt. St. Mtn, 777 was 666, Animal Disguise, Woodsist and Skulltones and their new LP has just been released by Tom Lax's legendary Siltbreeze label. So come on down and experience the madness of Sic Alps.
With supports from Leeds' deranged strum and bash trio THE UPRIGHTS and Sheffield's kings of manic retardo punk THE HIPSHAKES (Black Lips' Die Slaughterhaus label, Goner), this should be a night you won't forget!
