Born and raised in a peaceful little town called Baarlo, in the south of the Netherlands. Enjoying the country life and growing up with old-time country music from Marty Robbins, Hank Williams and name giver Johnny Cash (“A boy named Sue” was a hit from Cash in 1975, the year Sue was born).
Starting singing lessons at age 15. Hoping to get over her insecurity and shy personality. It took a few years to make the step from her bathroom to the stage.
August 2003 things got serious when she was the opening act for New York’s singer/songwriter Eugene Ruffolo and guitarist/producer and singer/songwriter as well BJ Baartmans.

Since December 2004 Sue is part of country/folk/Americana-band Hillock (www.Hillock.nl). Their repertoire contains music by Eva Cassidy, Dixie Chicks, Alison Krauss, Nancy Griffith, Mary Black an Emmylou Harris. And a couple of their own songs (written by Sue).

Outside Hillock she’s also building a career. Solo, sometimes accompanied by Hillock guitarist Cor Vaessen or other musician friends at several locations and happenings.
Playing covers from Lynn Miles, Eva Cassidy, Bonnie Raitt, Gillian Welch, and James Taylor. And her own work which is inspired by personal events and news from everyday life all over the world.
Unique because of her own characteristic style of voice. Intimate and fragile, sensitive, tender and full of warmth. When you listen to her, you’ll experience it as if she’s playing and singing for you and you alone…

Sue hooked up with producer/musician BJ Baartmans to record her first solo EP in BJ's studio "Wild Verband". They were also assisted by Singer/Songwriter Bart Oostindie.

(Limburgs talent) Sue van Rens "Closure"
Als je Sue van Rens het openingsnummer van haar debuut EP hoort inzetten "As if he's got something to say" dan gaan je eerste gedachten richting Eva Cassidy. Haar stem met heel licht vibrato en ook het liedje doen heel even denken aan de deze veel te vroeg gestorven ster.
Wat verder luisterend kan ik associaties met Lucinda Williams en Bonnie Raitt niet onderdrukken. Sue van Rens weet met haar liedjes niet de minste onder haar voorbeelden op te roepen zonder dat ze zich schuldig maakt aan enig kopieer werk. We hebben hier te maken met een (nieuw) talent uit het Limburgse Baarlo.
De stijl waar Sue van Rens zich op dit debuut mee bedient is country met een vleugje blues en een scheut folk. Ze wordt bijgestaan de locale grootheden uit het clubcircuit BJ Baartmans, Bart Oostindie en ook JW Roy horen we voorbij komen op dit zesnummers tellende mini album. Vijf van de zes songs zijn van haar hand. De cover "Broken things" is van Julie Miller.
Met name BJ Baartmans en de rijzende ster Bart Oostindie nemen de begeleiding van Sue voor hun rekening. Bart Oostindie leent ook zijn stem aan wat achtergrond/harmonie vocalen. Instrumentaal is dit debuut dan ook prima in orde. Het kleurt allemaal heel lekker bij elkaar. Als je de mandoline van BJ Baartmans in "New Orleans" hoort dan zie je als het ware het water door de straten van de stad stromen, het gaat natuurlijk over de storm Katrina die de stad enorm verwoeste.
Het album(pje) wordt bij iedere draaibeurt beter en doet me wel heel erg verlangen naar een volwaardig album. Ik verwacht veel van deze Limburgse dame met heerlijke stem en goed talent voor liedjes schrijven. Het is als het vooraf van een goed diner: de spanning is opgebouwd naar de hoofdschotel.
