Congress recently recognized November as National Homeless Youth Awareness Month with the support of StandUp For Kids, Virgin Unite and other homeless youth providers. We are on a mission to help support this decision and would like to share with you an opportunity to join us. On November 16, 2007 we will be spending 24 hours on the streets in Tallahassee, Florida. As members of StandUp For Kids, we will be doing this to raise awareness of youth homelessness and assist StandUp For Kids efforts to battle youth homelessness in our country. We will be on the street without money, food or a place to sleep.
On a nightly basis, there are over 1 million homeless youth in America! Would you believe that kids aged 12-17 are more at risk of homelessness than adults? Homeless youth all too often find themselves turning to a life filled with begging, stealing, selling of drugs and survival sex in order to survive. Sexual abuse, poverty, sexual orientation and domestic violence are most common in the lives of homeless youth and are often the reason they end up on the streets. The reality of life on the streets (both leading up to and on) results in 13 kids dying each day from assault, illness or suicide. StandUp For Kids is a nonprofit volunteer organization whose mission is to provide crisis intervention and basic survival necessities for at-risk and homeless youth through national and local outreach.
The challenge of spending 24 hours on the streets pales in comparison to what these kids experience on a daily basis. With your help and the efforts of StandUp For Kids, we can work together to reach more homeless youth and help make a difference in their lives. Your generosity will support the efforts of volunteers across the country as well as homeless youth throughout the streets in the areas where we all live.
