Andy Warhol's play, PORK , directed by Anthony Ingrassia, opened at La Mama and ran for two weeks.
Pork was based on tape-recorded telephone conversations between Andy Warhol and Brigid Berlin about her family's private life. Her mother Honey Berlin, a Fifth Avenue socialite who included the Duke of Windsor amongst her close friends, was livid when she found out about the play by reading a review of it in the New York Times. Brigid angrily called Andy and told him, "You're nothing but a fucking faggot! You don't care about anyone but yourself! And your goddamn fucking fame! And your fucking Factory! And your fucking money!"
Pork opened in London at the Roundhouse in August and played there for a year and although David Bowie wrote the song *Andy Warhol* before seeing Pork, he didn*t actually perform it for Warhol untill after he saw Pork. (Andy HATED it!) David*s managaer, Tony DeFreese, hired the Pork cast to form Mainman mangagment agency. After seeing Pork, with a bit of pushing from his beautiful and aluring wife, Angela Bowie, David changed his entire image! Shaved eyebrows, painted finger nails and coloured hair. The Mainman Organization hired many members of the cast of Pork. Tony Zanetta, Wayne County, Cherry Vanilla, Jamie De Carlo Lotts, and Leee Childers who had been the stage manager from Pork, and Tony Ingrassia who had directed Pork and directed a play on Broadway called *Fame*, years before Bowie wrote the song. Cyrinda Foxe was also in the NYC La Mama production of PORK. It has been said that *Gene Jeanie* was about her, and it is no secreat that Cyrinda and Bowie were at one time an item! The cast from Pork had a tremendous influence on Bowie. He denies it, and I have no reason why! Also on Mainman*s register was famous transexual Disco star, Amanda Lear as well as Iggy Pop, Johnny Cougar, and Dana Gelepsi. Anthony Zanetta played the lead part of B. Marlow (Andy Warhol) and Wayne County played Vulva Lips (Viva.) Jamie De Carlo Lotts played Paul and in the NYC La Mama production, Harvey Weinstein played JACKIE CURTIS. The part was cut out for the London Production. And Warhol SuperStar, Jerry Miller was also a lead character. Jerry gained her reputation from appearing in Warhol*s film *Flesh* also with Jackie Curtis, Candy Darling, Jayne Forth and Joe Dellasondro. In London, NYC Punk Princess, Cherry Vanilla played the lead part in *Pork*, which was a wicked, campy, quite insulting really, version of Brigid Berlin. She shot up speed and drove everyone crazy! She gave plate jobs and ranted about everyone, anyone, and life in general. (A PLATE JOB IS: The punter lies on the floor of a bed or whatever, with a see thru pyrex dish held over his face. The performer, squats naked over the dish and shits!!! (No wonder the English press and guardians of morals wanted the play shut down!)
