David McKenzie - National Resonator and acoustic guitar, mandolin and harmonica.
Over the years he has played in many bands. Some successful, some less so, but he saw a bit of the world. Many nights were spent in the nightclubs and music venues of Germany and Denmark.
Originally from the village of Glamis in the county of Angus, Scotland, it has been an interesting and varied trip of musical styles from school covers bands through acoustic songwriter, bluegrass mandolin - appearing 4 times at Guildtown Bluegrass Festival either solo or with band Strictly Bluegrass and many other music festivals throughout the 80's and 90's to the present.
Taking the spirit of the times and reworking tried and tested sounds and bringing them straight up to date with contemporary thoughts and words, David is helping to keep alive the primitive sounds of roots guitar-driven music in a modern setting.
Alongside his rapidly growing repertoire of original material, David is also a dedicated player of blues and ragtime guitar.
Be it Bessie Smith, Blind Blake, Big Bill Broonzy, Muddy Waters through to Canned Heat, JJ Cale and Leon Redbone or original material , if it has rythmn he plays it with heart and soul.
Also the lead guitarist and vocalist for rootsy-rocky-country-band Bang Zooms
Sugarhand (chosen for google searches, and there is another David MacKenzie playing blues) has shared stages with many great names from Stefan Grossman, Han Theesink, Carolina Shout, Martin Simpson, Dougie MacLean, Neil and Calum MacColl, and was in a band with KT Tunstall.
"Ticklin' The Strings" by Sweet Hollywaiians
Amazing Japanese hot string band playing 1920's, 30's, 40's style hawaiian, swing, calypso, blues, italian music and originals, featuring vintage instruments.3 songs with Robert Armstrong and Tony Marcus(from Robert Crumb and His Cheap Suit Serenaders)
"The Sweet Hollywaiians have probably the best feel for this 20's music of any string band working today. They manage the rare feat of sounding relaxed even when their playing is hot, are top notch musicians with tasteful arrangements and a full, rich, warm sound.Plus, they have a nice gamut of tunes, from King Nawahi to Giovanni Vicari to Bobby Leecan. See them live, if you can, for an unforgettable experience. If you can't, buy their Cds!" ~ Terry Zwigoff
