Sugur Shane is a pioneering DJ, producer, and lyricist from Philadelphia, PA, blending the best of Hip Hop and House music styles into his own. His biggest influences came from artists he grew up listening to in the mid-90s including Mobb Deep, Biggie and most importantly Gillette and Lil' Kim. The first song he ever wrote was an answer record to B.I.G.'s single "Warning," using the same beat...
"When it came to rap Biggie definitely was the one that got me into it first with the Junior Mafia release. Then with Ready To Die I listened to it so much I practically knew all the words to each song. I wrote my first rap to Biggie's song "Warning." It was about 3 minutes, like 72 lines with no hook, based on my relationship with my boyfriend that was closeted. I didn't use 'he' or 'she' in my song cause hell, I wasn't out either. But I wanted us to be and he was against it. I took the song and performed it for the first time in my eighth grade talent show."
The link to Gillette and Kim's unabashed lyrics and Sugur Shane's own can be heard in any of his songs, but the they also share a need to be themselves on record no matter how hard it is to to put it out there, or for the listener to hear. Realizing he couldn't be the artist he wanted to be and remain closeted, Sugur Shane began to write with full disclosure about his personal life. After he began listening to more styles of music, Sugur Shane fell in love with house. Inspired by DJs such as Peter Rauhofer, DJ Paulo and Junior Vasquez, Sugur Shane began blending the rhymes he had written with house beats and came up with his style. In 2005 he worked with DJ Taj from AL. and DJ Teke from Philly on his debut single, a reworking of the house classic "Drama." Titled "The Drama," the track has gotten spins in clubs down the east coast, from NYC and Philly down to Miami. Sugur Shane has performed it publicly several times including Pride weekend in Philadelphia.
While working on his debut album and planning distribution, Sugur Shane is writing and producing for other artists as well for himself. He is looking forward to performing more and is hoping to record with other artists down the line, especially the ones that have influenced him the most.
"I would love to make an impression on all the artists that have made an impression on me."
