Hank Williams I, II & III, All The Outlaws (Willie, Waylon, George Jones, Paycheck)... Not to mention our local heroes as well; Flathead, The Heymakers and all the other honky-tonkers we've played with along the way...
Born of like minded ideas in the middle of the Arizona Desert. Robert Perez (formerly of I-10 West) combined forces with Ray Lawrence Jr. To bring you Suicide Driver. A lethal dose of outlaw country, honky tonk, 50's rockabilly, with a splash of hellbilly.
From the start Lawrence and Perez began playing shows as a duo, without so much as a first rehearsal. This raw "Off the cuff" playing style multiplied the duo's repertoire with each standing performance. But duo was not enough for the Driver. There were missing elements...
With a chance meeting at a Sage & Sand open mic night, Lawrence & Perez encountered a humble but extremely talented musician, Chuck Piritchett... Within a one hour jam session there was no question and Pritchett would take the Bass slot in Suicide Driver.
With only one slot left to fill, the band would recruit Dallas Garcia as their drummer. Again, without so much as a first rehearsal. Further reinforcing their off the cuff style.
Shows would be energetic and tight knit as time went by. But line-up changes are a fact of life and Suicide Driver was no exception to the rule...
Changes in life would have Garcia resign to be replaced by Chris Redfield of I-10 West.
Ray Lawrence Jr. would retire from live music to return to the road as a truck driver. This would set the revolving door of lead guitar players into motion. It grew to become the big surprise on the local scene... "You never know who's gonna be playin with these guys" - A. Vincent. It was relevant to Perez & Pritchett that a solid lead man was in need. Make way for Dave Eras of Plowed Under to fill the void. With a Tasteful blend of steely bends and Fender twang Eras would breathe new life into Suicide Driver...
Schedule conflicts would later force Chris Redfield to leave The Driver. Bud Meyers (Formerly of 13 To The Gallows) would fill this spot bringing the energy of an eight day clock. It wouldn't take long for the band to be up and running again. But four months later Suicide Driver and Bud Meyers would part ways. After a short search Ryan Rice, a veteran of the Tempe music scene, would again complete the line-up. With a skilled hand at "Honky Tonk" music, a shuffle feel that pulls you onto the dance floor and his hopeless addiction to Bob Dylan, Suicide Driver is fast becoming a Valley favorite.
