Sum-in-1 was born in Los Angeles in 1982.
(Mother from the Philippines and his Father from Atlanta)
Growing up as a kid in the L.A. area he coped with poverty and his parents divorce,
but still found an outlet to channel his anger into an Art Form.
He was exposed to all 4 elements at a very young age and by the age of 13,
he began doing graffiti, break dancing and learning how to DJ with other kids from his junior high. Before he could even afford turntables he tried mixing tapes together on his boom box and was passionate to try the real thing. He picked up quickly on the fundamentals of DJ’ing (Mixing, Scratching, Juggling) with the guidance of friends, Jedi, DJ Earwaxxx, Mills and DJ Leviathan.
He sharpened his skills till the age of 16 and in early 1998, he than emerged as a DJ doing mix-tapes, spinning at house parties, hip hop shows and raves, as well as promoting his own events called "Underground Anthem”, which gave himself an opportunity to showcase his talent along with crew.
As a DJ he enjoyed spinning and rocking the party, but he also had a dream of 1 day rocking that same party with his own beats & rhymes. He plugged the MIC into his mixer and started writing lyrics and freestyle rapping with his buddies and over a period of time, evolved from a DJ to an MC. As an MC, he tested his wits in the battle circuit all over L.A. at different shows & ciphers. Besides his own will to succeed, musically he was also influenced by the many MC's and Producers who came before him.
He worked as Teachers Assistant for the Los Angles Unified School District and enjoyed the time he dedicated to educating the youth and also teaching them about the Hip Hop Culture.
In college, he studied Music Technology for multiple semesters and learned the Art of Beat Making under professor Doug Forbes. Along with studying creative writing to benefit his lyricism, these 2 classes were the most beneficial classes he took in college, which he ended up never finishing. He composed his first beat in early 2001, and a month lather wrote & produced his very first song, entitled Sum-in-1 “The Call Out”.
In the middle of 2001, Sum-in-1 formed the L.A. based Hip Hop group the –Metamorphs- with Mobius, The Seer, and DJ Leviathan. Composed of 3 MC’s and 1 DJ, –Metamorphs- released their first (EP) “Illumined States” in 2003. Along with performing they gained good exposure with 1 single off the EP entitled “Pride” being featured on an internationally distributed Hip Hop Compilation entitled “The Crate Diggers EXP”.
In 2003, Sum-in-1’s life flash before his eyes in a severe car accident,
which left him with a near death out of body experience.
While on the freeway driving home after a show, he fell asleep going 60 miles an hour.
He crashed into a parked police car in the slow lane, knocking the 2 officers inside the car unconscious, breaking the female officer’s nose and giving whiplash to the male officer in the passenger seat. Awaking from the accident with an air bag in his face and his car demolished, Sum-in-1’s life was spared and he luckily suffered no bodily injuries. After being arrested and a year of court and lawsuits, all charges were dropped and settled.
In 2005 Sum-in-1’s group the –Metamorphs- dropped their 2nd Album “Stepping Stones”, an instant classic which is a 20 track Album with many hits and it continues to get great attention around the world. Released by Acropolis Records and Available on ITUNES. Features By: C-Rayz Walz, Tak, Mykill Miers, DJ Dave, DJ Earwaxxx, State of the Art, Pow Shadowz, DJ Dave, Track Addicts, Jeanine Strong, and Mahli A.
In 2007 Sum-in-1 teamed up with Female Soul/R&B Singer,
–Mahli A- and produced a few tracks for her self-titled Album soon to be released. To Sum it up, it’s R&B/Soul with a Hip Hop Twist.
Sum-in-1 has a Solution for the formula that many Artists have fell victim too nowadays. On the MIC, it’s passion, delivery, voice, lyrical content, and stage presence. When it comes to beats, let’s just say they’re always the beats that go boom!!
In 2009, along with his Solo (EP) "& Than Sum"
the –Metamorphs- Upcoming (LP) “Age of the Gods” and production for multiple artists, Sum-in-1 has also made a name for himself as a composer for
T.V. Shows, Motion Pictures, Commercials and Video Games
The Horizon has a bright future for Sum-in-1 and as an Artist with a vision,
there’s no stopping in sight.
