About me:

Summer C.u.t.S (Cinema under the Stars) Film Series Returns May 20

see series schedule in blog section

FLEX (FLorida EXperimental Film Festival) and The City of Gainesville Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs are proud to present the return of the Summer C.u.t.S. film series. The films to be presented in this series are special for a number of reasons. First and foremost they are refugees-16mm prints of classic cinema that the University of Florida was planning to discard due to a lack of storage spac until some 3000 16mm prints were salvaged by UF Film professor, Roger Beebe.

This year's series, curated by Zach Veltheim, is an amazing line up of some of the rarest gems in this collection. The series was programmed as a follow up to last summer's C.u.t.S.--titled "The World, Part I" (curated by the now sadly departed Warren Cockerham). In this year's "The World, Part II," Veltheim arranged as a breakneck "Around the World in 10 Weeks" tour. We start in the US with Robert Altman's California Split before racing off to Mexico (Los Olvidados), Cuba (Memories of Underdeveopment), France (Masculin Feminin, Zero for Conduct), England (The War Game; Seance on a Wet Afternoon), Sweden (Hour of the Wolf), Poland (Cul de Sac), before ending up in Japan with a gorgeous print of Akira Kurosawa's Throne of Blood.

FLEX has presented previous iterations of Cinema Under the Stars series to raise much-needed funds for the festival; however, this summer FLEX is partnering with the City's Division of Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Affairs to make this series free and open to the public. (FLEX is always happy to accept your donations, however, so if you'd like to make a contribution at the screenings, they're certainly welcome.) The series begins Tuesday, May 20 and continues weekly through July 31. Films will begin at dusk (around 8:30 p.m.) on the exquisite grounds of the Thomas Center, tucked away in the intimate Turtle Court, located on the west side of the facility (302 NE 6th Ave). For more information log on to www.flexfest.org or call 334-ARTS.

For more information contact David Ballard at 393-8527 or ballarddg@cityofgainesville.org or Zach Veltheim at abeemovie@yahoo.com.
