"Over the past 10 years, this band's musicianship and personal influences have coalesced into an exciting new sound and style devoted to melody, harmony, rhythm, improvization, and 'the pocket'. Summer of Sol takes their craft very seriously. But, after all is said and done, it's about having fun and you can feel that at their performances and in their music. Mixed with traces of the genres that inspired them into the spotlight: Rock, Funk, Blues, Jazz, Motown, R&B, Soul, Pop... and driven by a collective desire for musical evolution, the end result of their efforts brings you lively, passionate performances that are extremely hard to match, and very easy to enjoy... definately check out Summer of Sol!!!"- C. Harden
Originally called "Everything Under the Sun", Summer of Sol has earned a respectable name in the underground Michigan music scene by putting forward uniquely talented performances, honoring diverse styles of music, and drawing crowds wherever they decide to set up and play. Boasting a distinct repertoire of hits steeped in pure American music, they have been entertaining audiences with high-caliber musicianship at public and private events throughout Michigan since the winter of 1999.
It's members are a slice of the local music scene represented by the unforgettable, unharnessed natural vocals of Lauren Gewirtz; the solid riffs, grooves, and chops of guitarist Doug Fritch; the powerful and soulful statements of 6-stringman Will Rideout; with fearless and free dialogue from Jon Gewirtz on tenor saxophone; phenominal candid funk musings via bassist Jon Herrmann; and solid-smooth rhythmic pockets crafted by drummer Jeff Shoup.
They seem to have found that perfect formula: the right chemistry, instrumentation, choice of gear, alignment of the planets, or perhaps just a glitch of the local matrix... Whether you're tired and ornary or in rare form; inevitably, they will give you something to actually get up and dance about.
In Mid-Michigan, they have been featured at a variety of venues: the CommonGround Music Festival; "An Evening of Jazz" at Lansing Community College; in Dewitt at the grand opening of the rebuilt Sammarkand Kennels; on Lansings live variety TV show, "Time Slot" featuring original compositions and individual interviews; guest perfromances at the Green Door's annual Blues for Distrophy benefit, and benefit for American Troops in Iraq (a live compilation CD sent to support soldiers stationed there). Summer of Sol has opened for the likes of Rare Earth at the Commonground Music Festival in Lansing and Edgar Winter in Chesaning, MI. You also may have experienced them locally at Roxy's; The Irish Pub; The Exchange; The Nuthouse; 621 of Lansing; The Green Door Blues Bar; Mac's Bar; Tripper's Sports Bar; The Dollar Nightclub; Dublin Square; Rick's American Café; The Landshark; Harper's Micro-Brewery; Troppo; the former Small Planet; and the Eastwood Mall- all in the Greater-Lansing area.
In the areas surrounding the capital city of Michigan, SoS has driven audiences to dance and sing at venues such as The Rosebud, The Wharf, and Kirby's in Grand Haven; Parrot's in Holland; Sluggo's, the former Pearl Street Tavern, and the Grand Woods Lounge in Grand Rapids; The Wayside in Kalamazoo; The Matterhorn in Marshall; Roxy's-17 West in Battle Creek; the former Main Street Pub in Lowell; Wonderland Lanes in West Bloomfield; The Library Pub in both Novi and West Bloomfield; Petruzello's in the Metro-Detroit area; the Redwood Lounge in Flint: the Bear River Brewery in Petoskey; and at The French Outpost on Mackinac Island. Perhaps your home town is next!??
SoS would like to give respectful thanks and appreciation to all establishments and individuals who hired, or hosted the band, and the friends, musicians, and bands who've helped them along the way: (including founding fathers Chris Harden, Brad Pirochta, Aaron Jupp, and Dave Keeney), Chris Diener, Sean Granberry, Ryan Mellott, R.T. Huhn, Lucas Roll, Andy Chorkey, Jake Doan, Ben Godoshian, Doug Decker, Ramone Jefferson, Steve Wincewski, Sweets Edmondson, Matt Grandstaff, Jason Chambers, Damian Casola, Norm Druce, Collin Dupuis, Jive Dharma, What It Is?!, Root Doctor, Funkilineum, Organissimo, The Grand Scam, Righteous Tongue, Soulstice, Global Village, Big Willy, Smooth Daddy, Hukster, Kaplutis, Charley Horse... there's always more... Hello, I noticed you read my email and friended me but did not respond as to if you are available or interested, should I assume you are not available? Just trying to get some good music planned. Thanks
Yes we are inviting you to our shows this weekend and yes it is because we are just like any other musicians who crave large audiences and attention. BUT, the one difference is that on Saturday night, along with giving out a bunch of cd's, we have a professional photographer coming in all night to do candid and staged shots of the band and audience. So, if you'd like to get your mug in a pro shot that might just end up as one of our future promo shots, come on out to the Woodshed in Clio on Friday and/or Saturday night, we hope to see you there!
