Let me begin by saying, we are a modern aggressive rock band, Sunday Girl. We were getting ready to start our national tour, “Sick Views for the Greater Cause”. In order to feel good about this tour, and/or have the monetary resources with gas prices the way they are and Mother Earth in a downward spiral, I (Noah T. Boinay, guitar and lead vox) decided to convert a 1997 International Handybus. This process took about 6 weeks of blood, sweat and tears, along with the finishing touches from Darryl of Evergreen Motors. In the end she could hold 40 gallons of filtered oil, 40 gallons of crude oil and 45 gallons of crude oil on the trailer. All this nestled nicely in under a couch, custom built on the buses wall; was fully insulated (100% recycled cotton insulation), and equipped with an “on-the-go” filtration system. Also, I plumbed an outboard pumping system so as to never have to spill mass amounts of grease in the vehicle again, along with an outboard filling station for the trailer containers. After completion of this project our flat-black tour bus, lovingly referred to as Black Mambo, was fully loaded with 125 gallons of WVO, plus the 35 gallon diesel tank, 4 comfortable bunks, captains chairs, operating sink and stove recycled from my old VW camper, Sunday Girl set out in early May for the Sick Views National Tour leaving our home state of Massachusetts. With that being said, the system itself was not foolproof on the road. There were clean outs of the entire pumping and tank system and she did go through filters a little more than we would’ve liked. Yet once into a warmer climate we could pump 100 gallons in under 10 minutes and most restaurants, especially Red Lobster, were quite willing to give up the brown gold. But here’s where the trip got a little rough, when we crossed the New Mexican border. This is where we came to find out that WVO is slowly becoming a big business. Most dumpsters were on lockdown. People contracted into companies charging the restaurants to remove the waste and then selling it back to various other buyers at 80,000 gallon increments. Needless to say our 125 gallon request was denied! But once again Red Lobster came through to the rescue, I must say for a corporate chain they are some of the coolest and most understanding about alternative fuel systems. But we did make it to our final destination San Diego California; after 7525 miles, three clean outs, 10 fuel filters and only $550.00 spent on diesel. In a 19,000 lbs tour bus that housed five people, two dogs, fully equipped facilities, not to mention packed to the teeth with enough gear to make load rock music every night and getting a mere 10 miles/gallon, I must say that Greasecar™ is the only way to tour. And that’s our story............
