The Sundogs (Madison, WI) are a four-piece guitar band covering classic rock and power pop tunes from the 60s (Beatles, Rolling Stones, Hendrix, CCR, etc.) to the present (Green Day, Semisonic, Oasis).
The band began as something of a lark back in Fall of 2000. Jon and Grant, both professors in the Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences Department at UW-Madison, wanted to put together a few rock and roll numbers for the departmental holiday party. They recruited a post-doc, Greg Postel, to play bass and a former M.S. student, Brian Michalowski, to play drums. The gig went over so well with both colleagues and students that they set their sights higher, learned a bunch more songs, and began playing local taverns and clubs. Oh, and they bought a heckuva lot more gear too.
Bass player Greg soon left town for new day job and was replaced by Matt Ackerman, who stayed with the band through its four-year-long "growing phase" before moving onto another project. As of summer 2005, the Sundogs are extremely fortunate to have bassist Graham Judson, who brings considerable talent and twenty years of experience from his other bands, including Out on a Limb.
The career pinnacle for the Sundogs came when they got to play on the outdoor stage on the Union Terrace last summer (2005)-- their favorite venue of all time! Along with festivals, parties, fundraisers, and the occasional bar gig, they now play quite a few post-reception dance parties for weddings, for which they've been getting rave reviews (see client feedback at Gigmasters.com -- straight 10s!).
Hey Sundogs! You are the only band I consider a friend. After all, I was in the audience for your first performance ever.....other bands can't compete with that!
