The Atlanta, GA band wants to say their music is one thing, but without labeling it, I’d like to say its full of memorable harmonies and melodies, played by talented musicians willing to lay their emotions out for all to hear, to tour the east coast incessantly, to play with bands less inclined to sound unique. ZME MUSIC
"Still new on the scene and fresh out of the studio with their debut album, Sun Domingo are often described as 'progressive pop rock' by fans and critics. A new genre of music it seems they've created - Bridging the gap for listeners who seek depth & adventure in music but also enjoy the timeless pop hooks.
Already collecting a loyal fan base around the United States and now reaching fans in Europe & UK via internet , the band is forming what you can now call a serious buzz." -CD BABY.com
Performer Magazine said "Sun Domingo is a band that knows how to write songs painted with rich color and emotion, filled with heart and the power of the mysterious."
History and Insights
Having only been together for a little over four years, the band has been through more career roller coasters than most artists experience in a twenty year span. Playing over 900 shows in this short period of time. In the Spring of 2005 the band, in need of a full-length album, went to Kentucky to record some tracks with well-known 70's/80's producer Jeff Glixman (Kansas, Kiss, Yngwie Malmsteen). Following the session, Glixman lost interest and the project floundered.
In May 2006 former members Brian and Forrest left the band to pursue other interests. Edgel immediately began a semi-national search for a replacement or replacements, auditioning a couple of guitarists in the ensuing weeks, during which time Sun Domingo hired former Ben Folds guitarist Britt "Snuzz" Uzell to fill in on everpresent touring duties.
Sun Domingo was back out on the road. As 2007 arrived, the band was gearing up again for the recording of its first full-length album with NY-based producer/engineer Tom Cassell, whom they had met two years earlier during the Glixman sessions in Kentucky. In early April, following two days of pre-production, Sun Domingo began the two-week album recording at two different studios in Atlanta. Luck was not on their side, however; the band lost days' worth of critical tracking time due to equipment problems at the first studio, and when the last day arrived the project was only about 75% complete. Cassell had to return to New York, the band - as always - had to get back to touring, and so the project was abandoned. Not long after, however, Edgel (guitarist) began cultivating a relationship with Brooklyn, NY-based indie rock producer Ted Comerford (Vaco, Jukebox the Ghost); this led to a two-song trial session at his studio in Raleigh, NC that summer. Ted and the band got on well, the product was good, and so the two camps began negotiations for the recording of 8 more songs that would finally round out a full-length album.
During the recording the band decided to finalize the lineup as a trio and recorded the album that way. They would play live as a trio as well.
Following a hectic few months of recording, with sessions booked a few days at a time around constant shows, the Sun Domingo album arrived at the mixing stage in April 2008. The first mixes came from famed mixer Jeff Juliano (John Mayer, OAR, Guster) but were not the style the band was looking for. Comerford provided the second mix of the album, which the band was not happy with and so shortly thereafter the band gave the tracks to Nashville mixer Jason Lehning ( Alison Krauss, Guster, De Novo Dahl, Sixpence None the Richer). With a mix nailed down, Sun Domingo solidified a name for the album (The World's Alive)
The album which was released in August, 2008 on MBM Records has drawn comparisons to Crowded House, Pink Floyd, the Police, Rush and other artists whose attention to songwriting and artistic integrity has earned them a loyal fanbase and critical acclaim around the world. The album is available worldwide through iTunes and distributed in Europe and UK through RACKET Records -
