The Atlanta, GA band wants to say their music is one thing, but without labeling it, I’d like to say its full of memorable harmonies and melodies, played by talented musicians willing to lay their emotions out for all to hear, to tour the east coast incessantly, to play with bands less inclined to sound unique. ZME MUSIC
"Still new on the scene and fresh out of the studio with their debut album, Sun Domingo are often described as 'progressive pop rock' by fans and critics. A new genre of music it seems they've created - Bridging the gap for listeners who seek depth & adventure in music but also enjoy the timeless pop hooks.
Already collecting a loyal fan base around the United States and now reaching fans in Europe & UK via internet , the band is forming what you can now call a serious buzz." -CD BABY.com
Performer Magazine said "Sun Domingo is a band that knows how to write songs painted with rich color and emotion, filled with heart and the power of the mysterious."
Who and what?
Although the race began over five years ago, Sun Domingo remains the feverish and unmistakably fresh, Atlanta-based power trio whose delivery of solid pop rock continues to energize and enthrall. Musicians, music fans and unsuspecting toe-tappers alike are intensely drawn to the magnetic live performances that crown catchy hooks and straightforward musicianship. As boys from the Southeast, Jason Pomar (lead vocals/bass), Edgel Groves Jr. (guitar/vocals) and Nathan Lathouse (drums/vocals), materialize a sonic sound and personality that drives their quirky, intelligent reflection of the post-adolescent world. It is one that we all crave, youthful or not, whether we know it or not, in a time of carbon-copied, mindless and uninspiring music.
The band met in Athens, GA while in school there in 2004, but the guys did not form Sun Domingo until late 2004. The band name comes from the 'Day Dot' stickers that restaurants and kitchens use to stamp the day that food will go bad: Sun (for Sunday) and Domingo (Sunday in Spanish). Essentially, the name means Sunday Sunday or Sunny Sunday. Not unlike the stickers themselves, which are marketed as “permanent and ideal for aggressive adhesion,” Sun Domingo’s buzz is one that’s not dissipating any time soon. And simply put, their the music, well, it sticks…aggressively.
This dynamism was born through impressive assimilation of perspective, exposure and creativity. Eclectic roots—from a vegetarian, Christian Scientist to a regionally famous, Southern gospel singer to an identical twin—and chaotic formative years, which included parental splits and moving from city to city and country to country, necessitated the quest for solidity and identity. All three boys retreated to music at an early age. Listening to the inescapable pop that plagued the airwaves in the late 80s through the 90s, in addition to soaking up masters like Led Zeppelin and Rush on the other end of the spectrum, Jason, Nathan and Edgel, developed unique approaches and non-traditional views of music and songwriting. Precocious talent was evident, and much like the guys themselves, did not fit the molds that their families, religious backgrounds and popular music encouraged. Learning world music, exposure to multiple languages, auditions for the playful Blue Man group and sensitivity to the business side of music made for an interesting twist on their collective self-taught musical abilities.
While unique and yet not at all atypical, these three histories form a mysteriously explosive and very real combination that rockets its way into its audience. Jason’s mystique as Sunny D’s front man projects through an astonishing range, which has been compared to that of Sting of The Police, a poeticism of lyrics that tells a necessary story without spoiling it with too much telling, and an amazing control of his bass, which seems to be a natural appendage as he grooves and moves to the massive sound of three.
The reach of their sound is global; they loudly and consistently prove that they are not just another Southern Rock band. Sun Domingo shot onto the international stage when Marillion, the world’s biggest and most conspicuous Independent Band and DIY-pioneers invited SD to Montreal as direct support for two nights in April 2009. As a result of the Montreal weekend, plans are in the works for a Fall 2010 European tour and a Live from Montreal CD is expected before the end of 2009, just in time for Sun Domingo’s five day appearance on the 10th Anniversary 2010 Rock Boat, which features such names as Sister Hazel, Augustana, Marc Broussard and Pat McGee, this upcoming January. In addition to the live CD release, the guys are working on laying down all the new notes that are more numerous than the hours they spend on the road, in the air and on the sea as a touring band. Their World Is Alive and begging for more.
