About me: My formative years were spent in the post 9-11 West where I became acutely aware of my identity as an Arab woman. As the war in Iraq began in 2003, I felt it necessary to (literally) draw attention to the current situation in my homeland through my artwork. Since then I have dedicated my brush to speaking about issues that are important to me regarding the media portrayal of Iraq and the Arab World. I attempt to do so by depicting current events that are often swept aside in the mass media, and highlighting culture and heritage in juxtaposition to the war-ridden history of my native land. Through my artwork, I hope to build a deeper understanding of the socio-political situation in Iraq and the Arab World and to generate dialogue within both Eastern and Western audiences.
