......2nd of September 1956 deeply absorbed in erotic reveries, i listen only vaguely to the conversation of three people from barcelona who, of course, are still trying to listen to the music of the spheres. they tell each other the story of the star that has been out for millions of years and whose light we keep seeing, as it travels for millions of light years, etc., etc., etc....... ...... ...... ......as i cannot bring myself to share any of their “feigned” stupefactions, i tell them that nothing that occurs in the universe astonishes me, and this is entirely true. upon which one of these people from barcelona, a very well-known watchmaker, says to me, not being able to stand this any longer....... ........ “nothing of all this astonishes you! all right. but let us imagine something. it is now midnight and on the horizon a vague light begins to appear, heralding the dawn. you are looking intensely, and all of a sudden you see the sun come up. at midnight! would not that at least astonish you?”...... ...... ...... ......“no,” i answer, ”that would not astonish me in the slightest.”...... ...... ...... ......the watchmaker from barcelona exclaimed: ”well, i would be astonished! and so much so that i should think i had gone mad.”...... ........ here salvador dali produced one of those monumental quips of which he alone has the secret....... ........ “with me it is the opposite! i should think it was the sun that had gone mad.”...... ........ .... .. ........salvador dali .. .... .... ..
