After I killed my hope that could have crawled into a dream he told me,"Mommy, be cautious be in the streets of Melrah" ...... ...... Born and raised in Harlem, New York. Gia Shakur has been writing since the wee ages of 11. She vowed at an early age she would be a poet after reading Willie Perdomo's Where a Nickle Cost a Dime. At age 14 after finding a flyer for Urban Word NYC she joined the organization as student, youth mentor and the WordWide youth board member. At 17 she had already performed at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe, Bowery Poetry Club, BAMcafe, The CUNY Graduate Center, Barnard College, Sarah Lawrence College, Yale University and several other universities, colleges and organizations. She won the First Annual Cooper Union Borough Poetry Slam (repping Harlem of course) and was one of the feature poets of the 2004 Urban Word NYC Slam Finals. Shakur's poetry reflects her life growing up in Harlem. "I write for my friends. People I love, things I feel could change. Or I'd be reminiscing on when I used play in chaos like it was nothing. Just everything that has made me and is making me at this point. I dont try to get too complex..." she said recently in a interview. Her work has been featured in Urban Word Anthologies (books and LP), The Brooklyn Rail, MNN and Good Morning America. Presently she is a the founder of the Harlem Alliance a group of poets, emcees, singers, producers, actors/actresses, photographers and visual artists dedicated to social change in Harlem and worldwide. Matriculating at City College it is no surprise she is a double major in English/Film and minors in Black Studies. ...... ...... ...... ......
