Sunpaulo was first formed by Taiji Sato (guitar) and DJ Really? in the year 2000. They performed not only at club events but also at outdoor festivals such as “the collective art conscious festival” (www.anoyo.net)and “Solstice Music Festival”(www.solstoce23.com). Their original approach to mix electric guitar with dance music has caught a great deal of attention.
The band also took part in the compilation CD which was released by anoyo.
In the year 2001, Taiji Sato who is a vocalist, a guitarist and a songwriter for the band, experienced total eclipse at the SOLIPSE FESTIVAL in Zambia.
After DJ Really? dropped out of the band in 2002, Takashi Numazawa (drums) and Toshiyuki Mori(keyboard) joined, completing the trio that make up the group today.
At the same time, their sound shifted more towards dance music with increased rock factor. Known as “Unknown Jam band on killer dance tracks!”, Sun Paulo began to create the kind of dance music that did not exist anywhere else in the world, with a dynamic, improvised sound that takes everyone to a state of trance.
They released their first album “After the Eclipse”, which includes a track beginning with a chorus sung by the children of Zambia right after the total eclipse…then followed by amazing percussion sansation of Marcos Suzano and Explasao de Elite from Brazil.
They also did the soundtrack for a independent movie “KALULU”, whose story takes place in "SOLIPSE FESTIVAL".
The band has been organizing a regular party called, “WISDOM” at Daikanyama AIR since 2004. This event has now moved to Daikanyama UNIT. So far, they have collaborated with many top Japanese DJs, such as KEN ISHII, Fantastic Plastic Machine, TSUYOSHI, EYE (Boredoms), Hiroshi Kawanabe, Moodman and many others. This party has become an intersection of underground and mainstream music, shocking the crowd more and more each time.

Sun Paulo... thank you for adding me! Most of us Americans may have never heard of your music had it not been for some of the awesome music you did in Polyphony Digital's "Tourist Trophy." The opening song for "Tourist Trophy" is amazing. It's a nice fusion of rock and electronica. Some of the other songs in Tourist Trophy ("Discommunication," for example) are also very cool to listen to. I came along to add you because your music is awesome. You are an amazing group. Have a great day and take care.
