++The original idea for lima/oscar/victor/echo was to release it on cassette. Cassette's are 'back in' for some reason – (maybe as a rebellious two-fingered answer to the ipod?) so I started to think about redundant media and then started to consider other redundant things; redundant politics, religions, philosophies etc – things that had served a purpose and had then been discarded on all sorts of scales. I have visited Berlin many times, and had become fascinated with films such as The Lives of Others and What To Do In Case of Fire and had read and re-re-read Anna Funders’ Stasiland –both stories of lives, lies and love in the former DDR. And that’s how lima/oscar/victor/echo came about - it's an album about a redundant politic (the DDR), in a forgotten country (east Berlin), in a forgotten time (summer/autumn 1978) and was supposed to be only available on a redundant media (the cassette) - it made some sort of sense at the time - taking another 70s trait - the 'concept album' to its ultimate conclusion. Lyrically, the themes concern themselves not so much with the cold war at large, but the inner, personal samizdat desires for freedom and little victories away from the prying eyes of the Ministerium für Staatssicherheit or ‘Stasi’. The album was recorded onto tape first and then digitally transferred. The second side (tracks 6 - 8 ) are improvised analogue pieces, interspersed with the transmissions of Numbers Stations, an attempt to create a cold-war hymn to samizdat code and logic. As always, thanks for listening, and many, many thanks to Marc and Ann for making this possible.+++SUNSETMUSIK.COM - The Official Sunset People website is now on-line+++My debut album Haiku Disko is also available to download from iTunes.
