SUNSOMA are one of those bands that need a string of adjectives to best describe their music, but let's start with Alternative/ Indie/ Rock/ Pop- yep, that should just about cover all the bases. The band are a 5 piece ( well 6 if you include Matt their trusty sound man!) comprising of female lead vocals, guitar, drums, bass and keyboards.Half the band hail from the Portsmouth/ Southampton area, while the others come from Haslemere near Guildford, Surrey, so drum kit laden trips up the A3 to rehearsals are a regular feature!
The band was formed 5/6 years ago by lead singer Mel,and in true rock and roll style has endured a healthy number of line-up changes since those days. The current face of SUNSOMA is, however, looking decidedly rosy cheeked, with the arrival of Helen (FUNKY D) on drums- YES she's a girl but NO, she doesn't play like one! Lee C on guitars - an immensly skillful and creative musician, and the latest member to join the happy throng, Lee A ..s- what can I say? He's just an enormous amount of talent all rolled up in one person. Long may this particular group of musicians continue- they are dedicated, have some great songs in there and deserve to really achieve something notable in the music world.
SUNSOMA has performed at many venues and festivals in London, the south of England and the Midlands, and have continued to impress audiences with their passionate delivery and energetic performances. They have also received radio play from a large number of FM and internet stations- the highlight of which was a live session on BBC 6 music hosted by Tom Robinson, followed by an interview with the ex-rocker himself!!
O.K, other things to impress you:
In 2005 the band were promoted by an Indie label Chromium records, and they released their first digital single 'WIDER' which was registered on the official download chart - the track is currently available to buy from itunes.
In 2006 O'NEILL the clothing and surfwear company signed several deals with SUNSOMA to use their tracks on their promo surf and snowboard DVD's
In October 2006 the band organised a fund raising gig for OXFAM and submitted a short video of the event to MTV who were running a competition to promote unsigned bands across the U.K. SUNSOMA were one of the winners, and were subsequently filmed by an MTV film crew performing their song 'HOLLOW' which was aired between May and July of 2007.
The band are currently promoting their music through SELLABAND.COM, which creates the opportunity for fans to buy 'parts' in SUNSOMA's future album and to become involved in helping them achieve their goal. The target is 50K (£25,000) and the band are determined to get there and put together a really cracking album. Each part costs as little as £5, so if you ever find a spare fiver in the back pocket of your jeans (this has happened for real!), then you know what to do with it! You do have to register on the site before you can buy a part, but once you've done that it's all pretty user friendly.
SUNSOMA are:
MEL SPICER- lead vocals
LEE CRANE-guitars
HELEN-FUNKY D-MACGREGOR-drums
IAN SPICER-bass guitar
LEE ANDERSON-keyboards
