So here is something about me, despite the fact that I hate talking about myself, I will rant on and on for a bit.
Started out DJ'ing when I was like 10 or so, my brother used to collect dance music back then. Some of the tracks I got hooked on to early were:
Jerry Knight – Overnight Sensation
Kwick – We Ought To Be Dancin’
Lowrell – Mellow Mellow – Right On
My first 12” record was D-Train – You’re the One For Me on Prelude in 1981. At around 1982 the wave of Electro blew my mind. Of course there was Planet Rock, but other gems like Cybotron – Clear stands out. Rap was growing on me since Rapper’s Delight and continued with other underground rap around 1980, like Crash Crew, Fearless Four, Treacherous 3, Funky Four Plus 1 More.
At the same time I was still connecting with soulful dance stuff and have ever since. I got into breakin’ around 1982 after watching James Brown doing the robot. Began seriously dancing after that until I ended up at Roseland among some of the illest b-boys, like Float from Incredible Breakers.
This was the time in NYC when the clubs were still innovative. I am talking about The Roxy, The Funhouse, Roseland (Real underground heads there), Danceateria and the list goes on.
I started getting gigs in NYC around 1987 at clubs like the World, Milkyway, Payday, Nells. Spun at a Club called Mars for a year or so. There we had a night called Trip where I tried to do a blend of old school hip hop mixed with Reggae, House and Club Classics. Had mad heads coming down at the time. Talking about Russell Simmons, Rock Steady Crew, especially Buck 4 (R.I.P.) who I hung with a lot. Kenny and Legs were there too. I had almost different MC's every week to come join our Host MC, Almighty Kay Gee from Cold Crush Brothers. This was the time prior to Kid Capri got big and Stretch Armstrong hung up checking out the scene.
After a few good years of playing at some of the better clubs in NYC, a new show on MTV sprung on, Yo MTV Raps, which was the beginning of the end of my Hip Hop career. I knew at the time that this would kill off, by the way of money, the true essence of the rawness of Hip Hop and time proved me right. People may argue with me, but then again they probably weren't around to see what I saw back then. it just isn't the same.
In 1989, I decided to fully concentrate on underground house and produced a record on small label. Two years later I became more serious and started up Power Music in my small Village Apartment in NYC. With some help from a few close friends in the industry the label took off within a year or so and soon thereafter I had a record that would take me to the UK, Blow Your Whistle, and on Top of The Pops. I spent the next 10 years or so making music and over 300 records later I decided that I had enough. I accomplished more than I wanted and moved to Los Angeles where I took time off to educate myself and slowly make my way back into what I have always wanted to do, making films.
So here I am now, in the middle of making my "first" feature film that hopefully will see it in to some of the homes of you peeps out there.
I have so much more to add, but this should suffice right now.
