Sounds Like
"France’s Alexandre Vaudin is Supercilious. Until his album arrived at the office, I was unaware of who (or
what) Supercilious was. But I can’t imagine an artist producing this kind of art and going unnoticed for very
long. This stuff always seems to find its way out to the people.
When you talk about IDM it’s inevitable that names like Autechre, Squarepusher, and Aphex Twin are going
to come up, and those same reference points can be placed on the French producer. But instead of just
recycling the sounds of his forefathers, Vaudin seems to be traveling down the same path as people like
Telefon Tel Aviv and Pedro. The same path of using the typically cold world of Intelligent Dance Music to
facilitate warm, melodic (and melancholy) soundscapes.
The album flows smoothly, taking you first from the darkest, bleakest kind of electronica, to cinematic, heart
wrenching melodies that make you swoon and reach for your headphones. Haunting female vocals are
added on a few tracks by Yucky Yummy, adding to the overall eerie atmosphere of the recording. Vaudin’s
strong production and obvious love for deep bass lines permeate throughout its 45-minute duration.
Albums like this make me feel like I’m 16 again. That tender age when you would truly get giddy and excited
about a new album. When you would hear one song on the radio and it would affect you so deeply that you
obsessed over it until you could get to a record store. Songs like “Energy Has Forgotten My Arms”, “Three
Points”, and “Dust Didn’t Answer”, brought that same excitement back to me. I’m in debited to Vaudin for
making such a strong album that it would bring those old feelings back to me.
Anyone who finds solace in a pair of headphones and full, forward thinking electronica will do themselves a
favor to seek this one out. It might not be the easiest release to track down, but you can bet that I’m going to
keep an eye out for anything Alexandre does in the future. This is great stuff, and I don’t doubt that we will be
hearing more of Supercilious’s name in the years to come."

The songs of this quartet are a torrent of emotions and rates/rhythms
powerful. Not hesitating to take refuge in strange and harmonious
sounds which plunge the listener in a completely atmospheric universe.
Influenced by groups like Pink Floy, Radiohead, Archive, MUSE, led
Zeppelin…, it is on scene that the group reveals all its creativity and
its alchemy; between slow pieces and others faster they make us share
an Ambient Rock'n'roll as of more shivering. Without speaking about the
song leader pure and unforeseeable.
