   About Matt Bauman and Hyperion
12.7 billion years ago, a mere one billion years after the decoupling of the four basic forces in the universe (gravity, electromagnetism, and the strong and weak nuclear forces), a now long-dead quasar, shining for no one but itself in an unfathomably distant cosmolgical cranny, randomly and without cause, reason or feeling, transmitted a series of radio waves in a discrete and specific direction at the speed of light out into the frigid, dead abyss of interstellar space. Completely by chance, in 1985, our sun (and by consequence its solar system) was in just the right spot on its 226-million-year exercise in futility around the supermassive black hole at its parent galaxy's center for our inconceivably tiny (1.77199405 E-16 light years tall, to be more or less exact) scientists, scurrying about on the rocky crust of our slightly less inconceivably tiny (1.34837077 E-9 light years in diameter, to be slightly more exact) clump of metals (yes... third from the central, big, glowing thing... over here... yes, a bit more... just... yes, there, thank you), to intercept these ancient radio waves on their unerring, cosmic marathon of electromagnetic oscillation. Said inconceivably tiny scientists have recently released recordings of the more melodic of these radio waves for the recreational consumption of their non-lab-coat-wearing (yet equally inconceivably tiny) contemporaries, with an encrypted disclaimer as to their origin, so as to disabuse such alien sentience as may receive these rebroadcasts of any notion whatever that these weird, cosmic tonalities could in any way have issued from a child of Earth.
