Superstrings began in early 2005 as an improvising three-piece rock group employing guitar, drums and vocals with the intention of collaborating with a series of musicians and recording a collection of instant compositions by the end of the year. To catch the band live at the moment is to witness the formative stage - a group striving for an emergent identity. Influenced by musique actuelle, '70s European experimentalist rock groups, and the British and Japanese improvising scenes, Superstrings are making themselves in no image, instead allowing the music to form the band.
Simon King's guitar playing, doctored with effects and cannibalised electronic toys, becomes braided through with the clattering percussion of drummer Paul May, and the sinuous and sometimes disturbingly intense vocal attack of legendary Japanese punk chanteuse Atsuko Kamura.
The band have already recorded two albums, the first featuring the imperious CD and mini-disc manipulations of The Hand of Glory - aka Lepke Buchwalter; the second being a live recording at Conway Hall with strings.
In addition this year they have performed on stage with Fred Frith, Pat Thomas, Karl Blake, Toolshed, and Su Zhuong.
There are plans to tour the UK in 2008 under the Club Integral banner alongside several other groups.
