Solidarity have called on the Crown Office to explain the millions of pounds of public money allocated to the pursuit of the partys' Co-Convenor, Tommy Sheridan. Lothian and Borders Police have been investigating the case for nearly two years with, at times, dozens of officers working full-time. Solidarity Press Spokesperson, Hugh Kerr, said:
"The question of why this investigation was launched, and the resources allocated to it, has never been answered. This is a waste of public money and a distraction of Police resources that cannot be justified."
Sheridan and his partner Gail are due to appear at a preliminary hearing on Monday 13 July at the High Court in Edinburgh at 10.00am. Kerr called on Solidarity members to join him in a show of solidarity at the court:
"All socialists, trade unionists and activists should rally against this attack on our comrades. Tommy Sheridan has never failed to stand by the people in struggle and it's time for us to get behind him to end this politically motivated action."

Following the revelations published in respected legal magazine "The Firm", The Defend Tommy Sheridan campaign calls on the Justice Minister to seek answers from the Lord Advocate. According the magazine's "exclusive", the Crown Office came under "incredible pressure" from Police to proceed with a court case they didnt have confidence in.
The article in the Firm is very serious and questions the independence of the Crown Office. Lothian and Borders Police are obviously very serious about taking this case despite it's weaknesses and are willing to change protocol and procedures to get their way.
The Crown Office MUST step up and stand them down in the interests of justice.
Defend Tommy Sheridan Spokesperson, Jim Monaghan said:
"The Police have not been objective in this from the start, in my opinion. The personal and vindictive teatment of Gail Sheridan in particular has shown how zealous they are in this issue. We cannot have the tail wagging the dog on matters of jutsice and we are calling on the Justice Minister to launch an inquiry."

Exclusive: Crown Office placed under "incredible pressure" to proceed with Sheridan perjury cases
Senior sources within the Crown Office have claimed that Lothian and Borders Police placed them under "incredible pressure" to proceed to bring prosecutions against Tommy Sheridan and Gail Sheridan, following their arrest in November 2007 on perjury charges.
Rumours had been circulating for some time in the legal profession that the case against the Sheridans was about to be dropped. However in January the Crown confirmed that both would face charges in relation to evidence given during Tommy Sheridan's defamation action against the News of the World.
Factors such as the perceived benefit to the public interest, the reliability or otherwise of key witnesses and the potential embarrassment in the event of a "not guilty" outcome had led to speculation that matters would rest without further prosecution.
Senior sources in the Crown Office have now said that they were put under "incredible pressure" in recent weeks by Lothian and Borders Police to proceed with prosecutions against both individuals.
Lothian and Borders police told the Firm that following the report submitted to the Procurator Fiscal in March 2008, they had no further involvement in the Sheridan case.
A police spokeswoman said: "The case was reported to the Procurator Fiscal in March 2008, since then the matter has been in the hands of the Crown, as is routine."
In February 2008 the Solidarity party claimed that the police investigation into the case had cost more than £1 million. That figure is now understood to have risen to £1.8 million. Figures obtained from Lothian and Borders' Police under the Freedom of Information Act also revealed 40,000 hours of police officers' time had been taken up by the inquiry by that time.

Kimle tanışmak isterim: Solidarity maintains that the ongoing perjury investigation into Tommy Sheridan and others who've been questioned and subsequently charged this week, is part of a political witch-hunt being carried out at the behest of Rupert Murdoch's News International Corporation and a Scottish legal establishment left reeling by Sheridan's victory in his High Court defamation case in the summer of 2006.
The only crime that Tommy Sheridan is guilty of is the crime of speaking truth to power. His is a political reputation built upon an unwavering commitment to speaking out on behalf of the most vulnerable and oppressed in society. He has and continues to speak out against the scourges of low pay, poverty, racism, war and inequality in all its forms - in short, against everything Rupert Murdoch and his vast media empire represents.
The resources allocated to this investigation thus far, both in terms of public money and police manpower, constitutes grounds for a public inquiry. Reports have suggested that over £1million pounds will have been spent by the time this investigation reaches its end. This is an amount that far exceeds the £750,000 spent on the recent 'cash for peerages' investigation into corruption at the heart of the British Government. As for manpower, recent news reports have stated that over twenty officers have been working on this investigation full time for over a year. Given that Lothian and Borders Police currently holds the onerous distinction of the worst record of any police force in the country when it comes to successfully investigating cases involving rape, the public has a right to know how they can afford such an allocation of manpower into matters arising from a civil defamation case.
Further, in 2006, whilst Tommy Sheridan was still a sitting MSP, a listening device was found in his car. Surely a public which has been kept fully informed of developments in relation to the ongoing investigation of Tommy Sheridan for perjury should likewise be informed as to why no such developments have taken place with regard to the investigation of a listening device being planted in the car of a sitting MSP?
Questions need to be asked. For example: has the police investigation into the listening device involved Sweeney-style arrests with unmarked police cars skidding into car parks at high speed, as Tommy Sheridan was subjected to? Has it involved home invasions involving nine police officers holding a woman and her infant child hostage while they ransacked her home, as Tommy Sheridan's wife and child were forced to endure?
Has anyone been questioned in relation to this matter? More specifically, has the editor of the News of The World, Bob Bird, been questioned? After all, this is the editor of the newspaper that was successfully sued for defamation by Tommy Sheridan in 2006. Moreover, last year a high ranking journalist working for this particular newspaper was sent to prison for illegally bugging the private phone conversations of various members of the so-called Royal Family.
Tommy Sheridan and his witnesses have absolutely nothing to fear from any investigation into matters arising from his original defamation case. Throughout they have conducted themselves with integrity and scrupulous honesty. We do, however, question the basis upon which this investigation has been initiated and conducted.
Rupert Murdoch already wields, through his various newspapers and media outlets, an egregious and corrupting influence over the body politic in this country. We demand a public inquiry into the possibility that this influence has now stretched to the workings of our police and legal establishment.

Thatcher used it against the miners in the eighties and Bush used it again in the nineties. We are currently seeing it in Iraq and Afghanistan. I can't argue with that. However, he was entitled to accept and he did and we can't change that. So all we can do now is hope that he gives a lot of young non-politically minded viewers some positive food for thought.
Just to reply to Annie's comments below. The reason Tommy has been picked for that show is because he is a politician. He is famous because he is a politician. He is the leader of Solidarity. The media will do their utmost to make him look stupid, which will damage the movement he represents. To think that he will be able to control the media from inside the BB house is naive. The show is seen by most people to be an indulgence in celebrity ego. Very bad mistake to enter into it.
Not a good idea to keep walking down the same road & falling in the same hole. Galloway has never fully recoverd from his disasterous appearence on the show.
As far as I am aware Tommy's entire career has been in politics, not in celebrity!
He's not a politician at the moment. He is a student with a family to keep and if I was in his situation and was offered that kinda money I think I would have accepted too. Also so far I think both he and Terry are doing well in getting lots of working class perspective aired.
Such a shame to see Tommy on Celebrity Big Brother. My heart sank. Big mistake. Working class politics should place principles above personalities, but Tommy has entered the celebrity world which is all about the personality and the ego.
I hope that the damage caused by this mistake will not hold back the development of a working class party in Scotland for too long!
