Second round still has a sporadic squint towards Seattle, but there is certainly more stamina and string in the quintet nowadays, not that this in any way has quenched the outstanding melodies, which will ensure the band's new album a sure spot among this year's best Danish releases. Urban, MJO 5/6
Surfact still delivers hard, guitar-rock, with a strong American sound to it. "Absolutely Shameless" and "All Night Overload", the opening tracks and obvious highlights on the album bear testimony to this. Everything is executed to perfection. In recent weeks powersong "Absolutely Shameless" has been played frequently on P3 - and indeed the first single from the second Surfact album bears testimony to a band in great shape, and to a band that appears to have found itself, while at the same time having succeeded in finding the golden section between unpretentious melody and hard rock. Just as it is the case with the entire new album, which is released February 2nd, 2009, bearing the enthusiastic title "Euphoria". The album is produced by the band itself alongside Søren Balsner (Carpark North) and mixed by Jacob Hansen (whose résumé includes, but is certainly not limited to, producing and mixing the latest Volbeat albums).
The "difficult follow-up album" is often mentioned, when young bands need to move beyond their début - and it definitely has not been easy for Surfact to achieve the brilliant result, which is "Euphoria". The band has spent close to a year making the album. Almost an entire recorded album has been discarded, when new and stronger songs pushed themselves forward, proving again how the band has grown more and more ambitious. "Euphoria" is definitely the sound of an experienced and tight band. Surfact's many concerts are easily observed in the cutting-edge, tight ensemble playing, which frames itself perfectly around the eminent and expressive voice of lead-singer Jesper Storgaard. There are many great songs on "Euphoria". From the outstanding threesome of "Absolutely Shameless", "All Night Overload" and "Song of Remorse", which opens the album, to the six-minutes long "Fuel" that monumentally rounds it of. "Absolutely Shameless" has already proven to be an obvious hit-single - and there are plenty of tracks to join forces and ensure a long-lasting life for "Euphoria", on the fans' cd-players as well as on the playlists of the progressive radiostations.
Søren Balsner has worked with the band to create a sharp and accurate production, which is superbly executed by the eminent mixer-work of Jacob Hansen, defining him as probably the best soundwizz in Denmark at present. And with a repertoire that stretches far beyond the metal-sound, on which his fame has so far been based.
Surfact was made in 2003, and had their début in 2007 with the album "Terrific Downfall", which opened with the single "Soulslide", a song that was no.1 on MTVs viewerlist Fahrenheit for several consecutive weeks and was also popular on Boogielisten and had P3-rotation. After launching their débutalbum Surfact has played more than 60 concerts at home and on international turf - i.e. with shows in Sweden, Norway, the US and Canada. Surfact is one of Denmark's most popular bands on MySpace - their songs have been played more than 400.000 times, and they have gathered more than 47.000 friends.
