SANTA BARBARA
- The Gaviota coastline is under threat from 5 mega-developments at Naples, Makar, Dos Pueblos Ranch, Ballyntine, and Las Varas. The Chapter's primary goal is no development south of the 101 freeway at Naples, with a long term goal of permanent protection for this beautiful, undeveloped stretch of coastline.
VENTURA COUNTY
- Continuing the effort to remove Matilija Dam, finish the restoration of Surfer's Point, putting an emphasis on water related activism including watershed management, coastal wetlands restoration, water quality monitoring, and educating political and community leaders.
WEST LA/MALIBU
- Has an incredibly successful water sampling educational program called Teach & Test at Santa Monica High School, actively engaged with the Ocean Friendly Gardens campaign in Los Angeles County to encourage homeowners and businesses to conserve water use and reduce runoff from their properties, closely following and acting on the Legacy Park project in Malibu, monitoring water quality issues at Topanga State Beach, Surfrider Beach, Santa Monica Pier, and a major public awareness campaign on the problems of plastic ocean debris and pushing for city bans on plastic bags and/or polystyrene.
SOUTH BAY
- Continuing their Teach & Test water sampling program at 5 high schools in Palos Verdes, hosting Ocean Friendly Gardens workshops in summer 2009, acting as necessary on the Toes Beach proposed development, and following the City of Manhattan Beach's proposed ban on plastic bags.
LONG BEACH
- Continuing the 10+ year campaign to reconfigure the Long Beach Breakwater to improve water quality and bring some gentle rolling waves to Long Beach, ongoing Teach & Test water sampling program at Wilson high school, and a new committee is working on plans for their Rise Above Plastics campaign.
HUNTINGTON/SEAL BEACH
- The Chapter is following the statewide issue of Desalination plants being proposed along the CA coastline, including a proposed facility at the AES Power Plant in Huntington Beach. They are participating in the Butt's Out Campaign, developing an in-school educational program, and the Chapter has a new Rise Above Plastics committee working on public awareness and outreach on the problems of ocean debris.
NEWPORT
- Continuing their Teach & Test water sampling program, and launching a new effort to ban polystyrene through the Rise Above Plastics campaign.
SOUTH ORANGE COUNTY
- Will closely monitor any and all activity related to the proposed Toll Road and Save Trestles issue, spearheading a new program for partnering with High School age Surfrider Foundation clubs at 5 high schools in the County, and they have a very successful in-school outreach and education program called Respect The Beach.
SAN DIEGO
- Working hard on their new "Know Your H20" campaign to educate the public on where water comes from and all the various water issues including Desalination, IPR, etc. Doing public awareness on the Rise Above Plastics Campaign, and numerous educational programs including; Hold On To Your Butt, Aquaculture, Sand and Seawalls "Got Sand?", Kids For Clean Water, and Ocean Friendly Gardens. |
