Surly is an experimental music group. We met in school and started calling ourselves Surly in 2003.
The reason we play music is to find some transcendence in it. "What a pretentious and meaningless piece of dung", I hear you shout, "What is it that you're trying to transcend?" you might say. Being the cynic that I am I'm happy to have beaten you to your position of cynicism - but cynicism has taught me something about happiness, and it's that joy is not to be found in cynicism. So, I'll return to my arty pap, for the sake of self-preservation. Liam recently quoted me Wordsworth as having said that poetry "takes its origin from emotion recollected in tranquillity" to best explain his reason for being a musician. I think there's something in that. And I think that justifies my obdurate defense of my first statement here. Isn't that what you can best hope art to do; allow the appreciator to experience an emotion that you felt compelled to relive through art?
This is what we would love our music to offer to you; moments of transcendence found in the recognition of sincere emotion relived in art.
